Hi all,

I am playing only tourneys lately and most of them are sit and go's.
I am doing very well in these and I am happy about my play there.

The problem are the larger tourney's i attend.
The last three were above 250 players and in all three of them I end in around 50th place. (pays are at 27th or 36th)

I normally don't have enough chips left to be a serious threat to someone and my high pockets get killed by big stack rags.
I just can't see where I can make more cause of the cards I get and where I bump into. (quads yesterday against in early round got me trailing all the way.)

I see the same names top the list every time and they get allot of respect .

I know it is hard to answer without a certain situation to describe, but I really want to make the difference and any advice is helpfull.

Any two cents worth allot to me.

tyvm,
Tommyhawk.

Keep on learning.

Hi :)

Since you say you normally dont have enough chips , it seems you are playing too tight.

and even if you get into the last money, it is not much more than your buyin.

What you want to do, to be a long time winner in tournaments, is to risk a little more, becaue you want to , once in a while, be in position to be in the final 3 (where most of the money is.)

And remember to get into the last 10% will only happen 1 time in 10 if you are an average player, so don't expect to much, most people do, then they tilt away extra money afterwards.

If you find my loosen up advice hard, then play some 1 dollar tourneys or freerolls or point tourneys , and you will not mind so much to let go of your false security (of playing tight)

Post your first multitable tourney win here :)
Also buying a tourney book by Sklansky is a good idea

I have read Sklansky's bbok twice now and what an education on the difference between tourny play and ring game play (where I make most of my poker $$).

First off, there are 250 players in a 250 player tournament. At least 100 of them should be some shade of decent, so don't feel bad about coming in 50th. Some tourneys you'll get beat down early and some you'll get run over and if you can place in the top ten from time to time you're doing just fine.

First off, it sounds like you might be too willing to risk your smallish stack when you aren't desperate. When it is getting tight, if you aren't in immediate danger from the blinds, tighten right up. If you figure that you'll be going all in on any hand that you decide to play, then do it with a clear hard advantage over an opponent. Go in with 2 pair on a flop or with a made flush or with QQ KK AA or AK preflop. Now you you dominate the hand of a big stack and lose anyway, that's just bad luck and you can't avoid that, but the key is to get all in when you have somebody dominated. You want to avoid 50/50 chances to double up or get up unless you are in a really desperate position.

Also, don't be afraid to steal when you are a small stack. If you're holding A5o on the button and the blinds are medium stacks, they are going to be afraid of playing any but premium hands heads up. Steal often with stuff that you're not afraid to be called with and remember that they are going to be terrified of doubling you up if they are medium stacks - these are the players you should be targetting. Basically the big stacks can afford to double you up and the small stacks are desperate so they are likely to call you. Thus if you want to make a move, make it against a medium stack who can afford to fold, but an't afford to call and lose.

Also, when you're playing wth all of your chips, don't call somebody's all in bet without something that is really very good, but don't feel too bad about betting all in with something on the cheesier side of good. As they say in the subway, mind the gap (concept).

Lastly, remember that there will be bad players all the way through the tournament. If you're close to the money and not sure what to do, you are almost always best off waiting for two players to go all in with eachother needlessly, get some money, and then restrategize.

THX,

Great advice really helpfull. I am so affraid too loosen up i propably play to tight in the beginning and hve not enough ammo.
That is why i see the big winners end early sometimes as well.

Yesterday i had QQ in BB and 3.000 left with blinds on 200-400. I am ready to go all in when UTG bets $3.000 seat 4 raises 8.000 seat 8 calls all-in 5.000 and i think for 2 minutes.
I fold knowing i gotta be up against AA KK and something.
They bet and all-in also. They got AA-KK-99 and me QQ in one hand??!!?
Now board comes ya don't believe.
A-J-K-9-10....AA wins...they all had trips!!! i would have won ofcourse. Would have been way up.
So should i have called???

i go out with AQ because i did not raise big enough and someone got two pair on flop.

I have learned again.

Your fold of QQ there was ok. Your read was right and you were dominated. Results mean nothing.
