Weird Last Hour..., Big_Slick, 26. Jun 2003 19:53 | ||

| After getting my butt handed to me lately (like the episode of Lucky where Lucky is getting beat by the little old ladies) I just got a great run of cards. My last 30 hands included: Q-Q where I hit the 3rd Queen on the turn to seal the pot. A-K Suited where I folded on the flop (bad board with 6 callers). A-Ko where I won a small pot. A-K Suited where I filled my nut flush on 4th street (and had an eager caller with a smaller flush) A-A that got maxed pre-flop by 2 other players who had Q-Q and A-K. I raked in a 20BB pot. My point is not to brag because any idiot could have won with these hands (as I proved). However, since Monday, I have been getting my ass handed to me. Granted, I have been playing good poker... just not getting any breaks. By staying focused and avoiding getting too emotional, I was able to limit my loses until the cards turned my way. I'm sure that there is a player reading this who may be going through a bad run. Hang in there... the cards will eventually turn! | ||

| Slick- Great run. This is a perfect example of why it is just as (if not more) important to limit your losses when cards are running bad because when they turn, your average profit will be that much greater. Way to stay disciplined. Steve | ||

| When you are getting hit by the deck like that: "Harvest". As for the current run of cards so cold that the Antarctic is starting to sound like a tropical vacation, ... Realize and minimize. In a way, it is useful to have swings like that, if only for the fact you really experience poker in the long term. Not much comfort but a valuable concept to accept. flintsword | ||

| Hey Slick, I've been away from the UPF lately, trying to really put in some serious poker sessions in Vegas. I didn't put in that many hours of play while I was in California and felt it was time to really buckle down and get serious again. There have been some great Omaha games at the Bellagio and that's probably due to the tournament that's going on right now. I'm so used to playing with the regular pros at the $20-40 limit and after awhile it gets boring listening to how MANY of us have the nut low and who has the nut flush as well. Know what I mean? The game is ALWAYS filled with total rock but solid type players who don't even squeak a nickel from their stacks unless they have the absolute perfect flop and then they pound the hell out of it! Anyway... I always seem to do well in these types of games as well. I sat in a high limit Omaha game over the weekend and knew I would be one of the favorites.(not bragging). I have been keeping a relatively close eye on the game and said, "there is no way I am not sitting here". So I put my name on the list, wait almost 3 hours for the seat and am still anxious and focused by the time it comes available to me. Well, I take the seat, play really good poker and am more focused than ever. After taking the mini-break that I needed, I was so eager and truly ready to kick some butt! But... that was not going to happen that night. The game was sooo good and why is it that every time the game is good, when you tell someone else, "yeah, I played in this really good and unbeliavable game last night", the comment from the other person always seems to go something like this..."you were in a good game?....How much did you lose?"! Never fails. Well, that rang true for me that night unfortunately as I can say, NOTHING went my way, nothing. I played one of the best sessions of Omaha I have ever played. The limit was not a concern to me, I was focused and was making really good decisions as well. But for anyone who plays Omaha on a regular basis knows that when you run badly in a session of this game, boy, you really do run bad. You get dealt the most premium hands (all the time) and nothing flops your way or you flop the nut-nut draw and THEN nothing. (which is even worse). I had played in this game/limit one other time this past week and couldn't do anything wrong. Played the same way, but everything just landed perfectly and I had such a nice win from it....really. It was just a shame that I couldn't add to that win with one more winning session this week. (But that was actually last week when I think about it, and that weeks over). Time for a new day and positive thinking once again. Anyway, as frustrating as this session was for me, I managed to keep my loss at a minimum but I just couldn't leave the game. I knew that if I was to just get a good run and a good flop on average, that this loss that I was having would turn around and for that reason, I had to keep playing. (I was still focused), and not to mention that these guys were 3 betting preflop with cards that I wouldn't put one dime in with. ...Unbelievable how poor these players were. (but note that I'm not complaining here)...I'm actually thankful that I got and maybe will get the chance to play with these guys again soon because a short run of bad luck(if you will), is simply just that. Oh God, I hope they still have money! Well....at the last hour of my play, I managed to "scoop" 3 pots in a row turning my relatively large loss into a respectable small loss. (not a win, but nonetheless, a very small loss that at that time I was quite pleased with.) It was getting rather late and my session was well over the 12 hour mark and although I could have played with these guys with one eye closed, the "new shift" was starting to pour in and these guys were more of the regular type Omaha pros in Vegas,(with their water bottles and their bag of carrots and wheat germ), and as soon as I saw them slither their way in to the game, I said, "that's it, you're done". So I picked up my chips, was pleased with a decent recovery that I had made and said, "ok, it's time for sleep"! Maybe my next session will be a profitable one for me and even though I did not leave the game on the plus side, I was still emotionally and psychologically satisfied with my play and my results. I was glad to hear that you had such a good run of cards. Enjoy it. It works the other way too sometimes so when you are fortunate enough to be on the other side of it.... Just truly enjoy it. Good for you, Slick....Keep it up! 4 POKER | ||

| Great Post 4-P. I've cut and pasted that into an email for one of my friends that had a rough go of it this past weekend and began doubting his play. I had to slap him around a bit before he realized it wasn't him, it was his hole cards. on 30. Good for you, Slick....Keep it up! > > > > > > > > > > > > 4 POKER Thanks Risky, Posts like these are not always easy to write (LOL), but I do think they act as therapy for me sometimes and after I re-read them, it also acts as a reminder of what not to do next time or to just stay focused and be positive. I very rarely question my own play during a session but honestly, sometimes I do question my emotions/comments. I almost never have a comment for another player but what does bug me is when the game is not ran smoothly and it's either the fault of the players and or the dealer at hand. Actually, it's the dealers fault because he/she is the one who must control the game. For instance, I was playing the other night in a game that was filled with mostly Asian players. No problem with that, but.... they were CONSTANTLY speaking in their native tounge after the cards had been dealt out and whos to say that they weren't telling each other what they had and stuff like that. I asked them to speak English, I confronted the dealer and the floorman and pretty much nothing was done about it. I really should have quit the game because even though I felt focused and was definitely one of the favorites here, the fact that none of the authority figures even warned these guys to stop, I was allowing myself to get a little too preturbed by their rude actions and because I am such a stickler for the rules in a poker room, was even more reason that I should have left the game or at the very least, I should have taken that all important break and ask myself if I was truly "up" for continuing in this game knowing that this was still going to continue. I was still playing good, and still thought they were such poor players that it probably wouldn't matter what language they spoke and maybe they were just talking amongst themselves about nothing much at all, but nonetheless, it did bother me, it should have been stopped immedieately and/or I should have considered all my options here, (quiting). I do think that when you get affected by something, (even something small), it really can take its toll on you and/or your game. I am a firm believer that you should play "happy" or not play at all. I broke one of my own rules and I am upset with myself for that. I know if I were playing in AC, these guys would have either had to stop speaking Chinese while the hand was being played or their ASSES would have been out of there just like that! But nothing was done and that is what I should have been dealing with at that time, I guess. Oh well, yes it is true that you can still be playing perfect poker and still lose and wind up questioning and even doubting your play later on. I didn't doubt my play but I did "get on myself" for continuing in such a bad mood! See, just by responding to you makes me think and reevalute the entire situation..... and I think I was more aggravated than I had let myself to believe at that time and I should have quit... no question about it. I don't know if that would have changed anything moneywise?, but I do believe that I would have had a more relaxing and peaceful night at home!!!! Thanks Risky, 4 POKER | ||
