Okay, so all day people have been arguing the merits of the nickname "Tiger Woods of Poker" for Phil Ivey. Some of you are insulted, some not. Some don't think he deserves it, some do. I promise you that all WPT is thinking about is the marketing aspect of the situation.

Phil Ivey is a guy they can milk all day long with their marketing dept. He is young, clean cut, and looks a little like Tiger. They are using the Tiger nickname to introduce Phil Ivey to newbies and to build a following for him. He may not have won the "big one", but he was at the most final tables this year, which means a following for him is a following for the WPT.

Poker is trying to go big time and in order to do that, they have to make stars. It's like any sport. You find the guys that are marketable and you make them stars. Phil probably is annoyed with the comparisons, but it's good for him and poker. For one, it probably improves his table image a little, but more importantly, it builds his exposure and makes him money down the road. Soon, you will likely see Phil's book and see him in commercials and see him hawking all kinds of stuff. He is marketable.

It's the same reason that Chris Ferguson is on all the WPT commercials despite never making a final table. He is a world champion and has a marketable look.

It's the reason that Phil Hellmuth gets camera time every show no matter how well he does in the actual tournament. Phil is the most famous poker player in the world young enough to appeal to the new, young players coming in.

You may not like it, but get used to it because that's the way it's going to be. If you want to build an audience, the action is simply not enough to draw a lot of people in. They have to have people to root for and some to hate. Personalities are what make money, hook the fans, and makes poker bigger than ever.

Each of you should write the WPT and thank them for their great marketing efforts. Their work puts more fishes at your table and more money in your pocket.

On that note, wouldn't Devilfish make a great villian? He could have his own gang. It would be Devilfish, "Mouth of the waaaaay South" Tony G, Phil "I am God" Hellmuth, and a subgroup of the shadowy Men "The Master" Cartel.

On the good side, you'd have to have Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson (with the Jesus nickname, he has to be good), Johnnie Chan, and Doyle as the wise old yoda figure, except bigger.

I'm just having fun here.

Actually you have hit the nail on the head. Poker has been an insular game, with its narrow view of the world. Now as " The Golden Age of Poker " dawns , things are going to change. Poker is loaded with marketable players and you just identified some of them. You young horndogs missed the point while you were slobbering over Shauna Hiatt
And fantasizing about soccer mom Annie Duke. Poker is a great game and is now very repectable, but too many people have been afraid to play in a public card room. The Internet has taken care of that. Now we need to expand the personalities of the top players. Annie Duke is a soccer mom, who can raise a family and still be a world class player.
Jennifer Harman is a sexpot who mani[ulates men and proceeds to make fools of them . A kid from Russia learns enough in less than 2 years to reach the final table at the WPT finals. If you go down the roster of those who made the final tables during this first season, you will find amazing diversity, unlike any found elsewhere. This is why with proper marketing, the "Golden Age of Poker " will be filled with little fishies trying to swim up stream and paying that expensive tuition we all know about. And corporate sponsors will be coming out of the woodwork.

<<not to mention the ones that turn into addicts and make the shrinks new customers. How does it feel to be an "enabler"? Maybe I am the only one that will think twice about all this "marketing", but I hope not.

And then there is Mike Sexton, the Head Enabler and all the rest that make their living from the "fishies." >>>>>>>

Can we make this a Saturday morning cartoon?

TKarrde

"You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never to get involved in a land war in Asia. And only slightly less well known is this: never go in against a Sicilian (Mozman) when death is on the line!"

Marketing of players as "Poker celebrities" has been around a long, long time. Amarillo Slim became insanely popular after his WSOP win, on the talk show circuit extensively, ... and we are talking over 20 years ago (a lot over ...). Check out the hype and vibes at www.thehendonmob.com, where a group of top European players have created a strong following, ... almost cult-like.

Granted, what we are seeing now is entirely new level. I am still absolutely shocked at how PartyPoker has grown in a year. Fully a year ago, there were at most two or three NL Holdem $25 or $50 table alive and kicking. Now there is a sea of them!

Last night--8 pm pacific--Party Poker--8157 players-- no free games-
Amarillo Slim was a " character " who fit the poker stereotype of a cowboy.
You did not see a flood of new players in boots and cowboy hats.

I for one am always cheering on Phil and want to see them push this Tiger Woods crap. Why? Because if they can captivate a few young black men by playing the racial angle and get some of them into my cardroom, I'll be more than happy to play with them. Anything that can bring new players to the game is great for the poker economy and if that means lionizing anybody who is not a middle aged white or asian man, then so be it. I want more fish and I don't care how we attract them. I'd love to see Phil Ivey, Paul Darden, Annie Duke, Kathy Liebert, and ... ... ... are there any good handicapped players? ... ... ... sitting at a final table together. It would be great press.

A handicapped guy made it to the finals of one of the recent WPT tournaments, I think his name was Buddy Williams?

Why does it sound like the start of a cheesey joke if you say, "This year a black man, a woman, and a guy in a wheelchair were sitting at the final table of the WSOP..."
