calling hands in the small blind, mongi, 25. Jun 2003 14:07

I am trying to get a better grip as to what type of hands I should call with in the small blind. I usually play 4-8 holdem. Do you guys come in with anything in an unraised pot? what are your guidelines. It seems for 2 bucks it worth it to limp in with alot of trash hands, assuming you know the big blind won't raise. Even though you are an underdog to flop something big when you do you will have great implied odds because it will be difficult for somebody to put you on a miracle hand. You just need to know how to stay out of trouble after the flop.

Here is how I play it, please critique me.

Assume it is a typical 4-8 holdem game. unraised pot
1) I will play any pair
2) suited cards down to J-2 suited
3)any ace
4) unsuited connectors down to 5-6
5) Trash hands as bad as T-7 or 6-8 offsuite

In a raised pot:
1) I will play 66 or higher if I know there will be at least 4 way action. any pair if it is a big family pot.
2) suited connectors as bad as JT, suited cards as low as A-T unless there is a big multiway pot then I may play any ace suited. I will also play suited kings down to KJ. Not sure about hands like QT and KT suited?
3)I will usually only call with nothing worse than AQ offsuite if the raise came from a solid player. maybe AJ in other situations.
4) unsuited connectors down to QJ in a multiway pot, although I will muck hands as good as KQ if the raiser is solid.

I know that there are many different scenarios but I would like to get a feel for how you guys play these hands. If you would like to comment on loose passive or tight aggressive games please do.

Thanks.

My requirement for limping in the SB depend alot on how many player are in the hand. If there are 7 limpers ahead of me, i will call with anything. I would be getting 16:1 odds in that case.

However, as less people enter the pot, i become more selective. I play all connectors (suited are better) and any suited Q or better.

If there are only 1 or 2 limpers, i would play anything against players who are tight_passive (who will fold) but am much more selective agaisnt calling stations or good players.

Basically, agaisnt alot of limpers i call because of pot odds, and when it becomes shorthanded i play according to my ability to out play my opponents.

If there is a legit raise, i think that the fact you have to act first on each betting round cancels the 1/2 small bet discount you get. So i treat it the same as if i was UTG.
