I play on-line low limit holdem exclusively. I use the S&M group list to determine starting hands. I've kept stats for several months and on average, I play 4 hands in 10, folding 2 after seeing the flop and play about 1 1/2 hands all the way through. Again, on average, the games I play sees 2 bets/betting round so I am in for 24 bets/10 hands. The average pot size in these games is 32 bets and my winning rate is currently 1 win/10.8 hands dealt. As is obvious, I am doing quite well but here's my problem:

I raise or reraise only with group 1 or 2 preflop (and sometimes slow play these) and usually bet or raise only after seeing a favorable board. I call quite frequently (which is a sign of a weak player according to S&M) and totally rely on reading the cards and betting patterns to determine what action I take. Every time I try to play "by the book", which is almost always more aggresive, I get toasted.

I've found what, for me, is a winning formula but I feel as if I'm playing wrong based what the "experts" say. My instinct says that in reality, I'm probably a fair player among a ton of poor players and as the stakes increase, I would need to play more in line with S&M. Has anyone experienced this or have any thoughts?

I notice that you don't mention "position" in your post. Understanding your betting and evaluation of playable hands as a function of your position is quite important. AT suited UTG is a different animal than AT suited on the button, unraised: One gets mucked.

Sounds like you are developing some good playing criteria, so keep playing and reading to improve your selection criteria.

Don't ignore the really basic books like the Poker for Dummies, since there are always a number of interesting points kicking around in those kind of books that all starting players do well to consider prior to reading TOP and books aimed at players with playing experience.

If you want a short list of articles on poker and poker play, just let me know and I'll post a few for you. Good luck !

You're probably doing fine, a lot of the aggressive semi-bluffs and tricky plays in S&M have no place in a loose low limit game. In loose games, deception is just not that important, raise with your best hands and when you hit the flop with the best hand or the best draw when in multi-way pots. If you miss the flop, check and fold. Play better hands than the loose players to start with and you are already ahead of the game.

In these games, also be aware that you should be seeing flops with small pairs, suited connectors, and suited A's when there are a lot of players in the pot to try to hit a set, straight draw or flush draw. When you hit any of these, bet and raise for value.

Oh yeah, don't get married to big pairs, if you KNOW your beat fold, unless you picked up some kind've draw to go with your pair, in which case you play it aggressively.

S&M have excellent hold'em books, but their strategy is optimized for higher stakes games, where you tend to get less callers/flop.

When you're playing at a low-limit table where there may be many gamblers, and making some of the aggressive moves that S&M suggest just won't work. At the low limit tables, you get people that will call with anything. If you're doing well and having fun, then good for you. You may not be playing optimal, but it sounds like you're tracking your game and trying to become better, and that's really the key.

If you are interested in a book more geared towards the low limit HE tables you might want to take a look at "Winning Low Limit Hold'em" by Lee Jones.

One other thing to remember is that most of the fancy stuff in S&M works best against a lone or maybe two opponents, a situation that you won't see very often at the low limits. Trust me (us)...with the amount of fish that are currently entering the game due to poker's popularity, straight, boring play will definitely get you the $$. The online games are insanely profitable right now from 5-10 down. Take advantage of it while the fish still have $$.
