Tournament Winnings and your hourly rate, beigs, 25. Jun 2003 07:32 | ||

| How does one account for tournament winnings? Obviously, it goes into your bankroll but I've been using PokerCharts to log my ring games and I'm wondering if I put my tournament information in there as well. I would think, no because the blinds change and you're really only making one bet (your buy-in) so you're losing less than in relation to what you can win. Any ideas? Beigs | ||

| Pokercharts really should have a seperate section for tracking your tournaments. If I get around to it, I'll make a proper excell sheet that tracks ring games, tournaments, etc. When I do this, I'll make it available to everybody here. | ||

| Thanks, stdioh. So, for now, I should just log my tournaments separately. So as not to skew my results on PokerCharts. | ||

| I just divide the winnings $ by the time spent playing the tournament to get the earn rate for the tournament. Your earn rate for the day includes ring games and tournament play together, total dollars divided by total time. You have probably read Daniel Negreanu's article on playing hours, not results, but I will include it here just in case. www.pokerpages.com/articles/archives/negreanu02.htm flintsword | ||

| I think that is somewhat flawed. What I mean, is that in ring games you don't only track dollars per hour won or lost, you track it in relation to the game you're playing. ie BBs/hour. So you have a win rate in $/hr, and you multiply that by 1BB/$x * $/hr to get BB/hr. For tournament games you would have to do something similar. For instance you might want to scale your win rate per hour by the entry fee, and then get entry fee's/hr as your basic unit of measure. This is further complicated by the fact that not all tournaments have the same portion of the entry fees go back to the prize pool. (But then again, the rake changes how much you make in a ring game).. Anyway, no solutions here, just musing... | ||

| Just a suggestion, but couldn't you somehow relate what you paid to get into the tournament to how much you won and the hours that you played? I don't see any way to convert it into BB's per hour. | ||

| I track my tournaments in a spreadsheet, and I separate them from my ring game results. For each tournament, I track the date, buy-in & type of tournament, my placement, tournament cost (buy-in + entry fee), and gross winnings. I also keep track of overall gross input/output. You might want to separate different types of tournaments into their own tables (you can differentiate by buy-in, type of game, etc.) You might also want to record how long the tournament took, so you can get a net hourly rate. I don't bother with all of this for tournaments, mostly 'cause I play UB's point sit n gos almost exclusively. | ||
