NL starting hand requirements, noiseboy, 24. Jun 2003 10:29

I'm trying to figure out how to improve my NL play. OK, lets say you are in middle position, say four seats after the blind, and you are a medium stack towards the last three or four tables in the tournament, blinds are $100 per hand 2K/4K blinds. I assume you pretty much come in with a raise with ANY hand you will play, since there is a lot of money to steal. What are your minimum requirements for pot opening? Does what size of stack/type of players in the blinds come into play in your decision?

Thanks. BTW, I've thoroughly been converted to NL play after playing that tournament. I'll still do limit events and ring games, but whenever possible, I'm playing NL!

Oops, I think the antes are only $75 per hand at 2k/4k.

One important point is how close you are to the money. If only a few players need to be eliminated before people start getting paid, you can steal a lot more because people want to be sure they are getting over that bubble. Also you must be aware of the players at your table. Are they too loose in calling raises? Too tight? Are they aware of the gap concept? Generally, if I'm not sure whether I should play or fold, I fold. Making a mistake by raising costs you a lot more in chips than giving up the small EV of a marginal hand by folding.

Things to consider:

- The other persons chip size in relation to both you and the tourny
- Your image
- Their image
- whether you want a call or not
- what you do if reraised / called ( are you willing to go all in with the hand )
- Whether you want a caller

Cheers
