Paying attention in LL online, Bond18, 22. Jun 2003 21:14

As we all know and have probably experienced, playing LL hold em online is gonna give you plenty of bad beat storys and excuses to go on tilt, and its pretty much impossible to read erratic opponents play. Recently i had a terrible string of cards in some tournsy, went to ring (big mistake) low on patience and lost even more. My solution to this problem is very unorthodox. Stop paying attention in the really loose low limit games, and save yourself the headache. Im writing this post as i play .50/1 at paradise right now and i've made 10 bucks in about 30 minutes doing this (with some cards) and reading super system while I play so i don't feel the temptation to lose my patience and play bad cards out of position. Whattya guys think, is paying attention in loose unpredictable games really important when players are in and out all the time?

Hey,
I don't have as much experience as some folks, but here is my small blind. There are so many pre-flop callers that you should just play quality cards and observe whose bank account falls quickly. There is no rhyme nor reason to some of these people's betting patterns. So really focus on the hands you play. Good luck and may the bad beats stop. DJpoker

Paradise 0.5/1 is not so loose on average. My stats show that about forty percents of players on average taking the flop there, and note that I always selected as loose games as possible. It's important to always recognize which type specific player belongs to: you'll find not only loose but enough tight-passive and some tight-aggressive ones at 0.5/1 at Paradise. Loose-aggressive/-passive players are also various, they have different leaks and habits. I think it's important to keep notes and adapt your actions to specific opposition.
Bad beats acception is another story. Again from my experience you must be already patient and prepared for one when it comes to showdown. Your main goal is not to win this pot or next one, your goal is to have as much bankroll as possible with your cards/opposition cards/situations. Then just play good poker and wait (week, month, year etc.)

Now you are playing my style. i hardly ever pay attention to the game. I do stuff like pay bills, balance checking accounts, clean up the office, make dinner, do laundry, watch tv, or just play in a couple other games.

Seems to work okay for me. But not sure it is a good habit. If I want to improve my game I'm gonna need to pay attention sometime.

I know it might seem strange, but I too have found my results improve if I "pay less attention".

What I put it down to is that I have taken a longer term view and am less concerned about individual hands. I know chips I lose to a bad beat will come back to me eventually.

I have had various success paying a lot of attention and paying no attention. However, since it is difficult (if not impossible) to get a lot of "tell" information online, you can (IMO) pay less attention than if you were playing live. Online has much more to do with cards than B&M play and therefore requires you to be ultra disciplined in playing solid stsrting cards and getting away from hands that don't hit the flop.

I try to pay attention as often as possible though just so that I can see what kinds of hands others are showing down. It may save me 1 or 2 bets a session against a player that I see cannot be bluffed out, or against a player who only bets when they are quite strong.

The reason this works, (according to sklansky) is that if you "don't pay attention" and just play your cards straight up, you arent tempted to use fancy plays and bluffs, which don't work against poor competition anyways.

If anyone has done the "listen to caro online" thing at cardplayer, some of the best advice I got off of that was in the real loose , especially loose aggressive games, call a lot more often than you raise. Let them bet for you, you raise back at them , they'll either fold costing you a bet on the next round, or re-raise when they occassionaly have you beat on this round.

If you just call, you never give your opponent an idea of where you are, and you can just fold when you don't have it.

I think for certain players paying less attention does have benefits. And I think you have named the right kind of tables where paying attention isn't as important. But in general I think you only get benefits from it because paying less attention lets you be more selective about your hands. ie. if you're doing laundry, you look up every minute or so and press the fold button when you have Q,10o in early position. If I'm solely concentrating on the game, and haven't gotten many cards lately, I find I'm more likely to play Q,10o in early position (and end up costing myself money).

Anyway it could be different for other people, but if you find yourself doing better when you don't pay as much attention, watch yourself and see if you are really playing tighter at the same time. Which ideally would lead me to believe you could really improve your game if you were able to pay attention AND play tighter...

When I first sit down in a LL online game I try to categorize my opponents.Who can make a descent laydown?Who never folds on the river?Etc..,etc...Once I have a descent feel for the players then I will start doing other things like balancing the check book.Finish up a chapter in one of Sklansky's books,etc..Then once 3 or 4 of the players I felt I had somewhat of a read on are replaced I start watching the new guys for a bit.I usually find myself paying more attention to the players I think are descent competition. They're the ones you can make moves on.The calling stations just have to see the best hand. And if I feel I have the best hand I try to make them pay dearly for their weak holdings. To sum this up.I watch the better players because they are watching me.And when they see my tight/aggressive image I can steal from them in the right situations.
