Seat Change????, chumpchange, 22. Jun 2003 18:10

I have observed this many times:

I'm at a full table in what I consider to be not the best seat, but I'm winning. A seat opens up to the left of a loose, weak player OR TWO. I move into that seat, and I lose my winning edge.

Is it possible that a seat change is not a good move? I think perhaps its like discussing stategy at the table. It wakes up worse players and causes them to play better.

If there as weak as you discribe then they probably didn't even think about your seat change as anything more then getting a better view of ESPN on the television. Although there is much discussion about where a loose player should be sitting I think you took the seat to exact opposite as to want you wanted. I want the loose players to act after me not before me. And the predictable and aggressive players to act before me. This way I feel I have the best table generalship available. I dont want isolate the loosey goosey, I wont to keep them in as long and as far as I can because they represent to me an additional bets in my considerations. I can also see how everyone else is reacting to their play. I realize seat postion is debately and welcome other imput.

I will always take the seat with better position and give up the "lucky" seat. Superstition has no place in your game. the chance of cards coming in one seat is the same as the next. However your position in relationship to the players does have great signifignace.

I think that seat changing is an important topic that hasn't had enough coverage - maybe you should talk about it in one of your cardplayer articles, Roy.

As for me, here is what I would say about seat changes. First off, try to stay out of seats 1 and 10. You can't see across to the corresponding end seat and not only do you miss out on tells, but it is easy to screw up the action and accidentally bet out of turn, call one bet when there was a raise you didn't see, etc. Next, having the right seat is important with respect to the other players at the table, but you don't want to pay for it. Posting when you move costs you half a big bet and that is half an hour worth of play time. Thus, I try to minimize my losses with a seat change. For instance, I'll move closer to the blinds (don't need to post) when I'm in early position and my hands are not worth as much. If I'm moving away from the blinds I'll only move 1 live player away, which means I don't have to post (house rules at Brantford). In fact, if the value of my seat is the same in either case and I'm in seat X and the player in seat X+2 leaves, I'll take his seat just so that I can play the extra hand for free. It adds up over time.

I'll leave discussion of where to sit in relation to quality of players for later, but I will mention another tendancy on card tables. Money tends to move to the right.

I always thought that if moved to the left. And the reasoning for it was because the person to the left gets to act with more information.

Sorry. I can't believe I said that. Yes, money moves to the left. I was thinking that you want to sit with all the money on the right of you and muddled the two in my statement.

It's very important to look who is sitting behind your "new" seat. Experienced loose- or tight-aggressive guy acting after you will make "good" seat very bad. Just imagine how you with A 10 in your hand isolate/raise loose player limped in, and then you both popped by something from next seat. Is next guy raising with strong hand, or is he raising because he knows that your hand is not quite strong?
