One Big Bet Per Hour?, Bill A., 22. Jun 2003 07:43 | ||

| Hello Friends, I am attempting to honestly assess my level of skill to see if I can make it as a pro. I have heard many, many people say that if you can consistently average a profit of one big bet per hour (ie. $20/hr in a 10/20 structure) you can make a living. I was wondering if is this an accurate measure? I have kept a log of almost one hundred hours of recent play and I am currently averaging well over the one big bet an hour. Do most of you pro players average better than one big bet an hour? I would appreciate any honest feedback. I know very few people can really make it as a pro, but I am just trying to figure out if I have a realistic shot. Thanks Bill A. | ||

| When I was playing full time B & M in Vegas I averaged just slightly over 1.5 BB/hr in the 10-20 game at Mirage and just a little over 1.25 BB/hr in the 20-40. These records came from playing virtually everyday for a year. Your 100 hours is not nearly enough to establish what your true win rate might be. When you have played 1500 to 2000 hours you will get a pretty good idea of where you stand. If you are a solid player 1 BB/hr is easily obtainable. Good luck. | ||

| Question.... How much should one consider a Big Bet? Probably displaying my ignorance, but please list 2-4, 3-6, 5-10 and 10-20 Big Bet winners. | ||

| DJ- 1 Big Bet is the size of the turn and river limits. So, in the examples you gave, 4, 6, 10, and 20 would be 1 big bet. Steve | ||

| Sorry to break it to you, but 100 hours means precisely dick. After 1000 hours you'll probably know how much you're making within about half a big bet per hour. | ||

| Morning yawl... I worked last night so unfortunately I cannot offer any of my habitual Texas Hold'em Massacre anecdotes, although you still might be able to share some laughter at my expense via an ignorant question: Can anyone explain a Big Bet and the coinciding hourly rate? Is this simply profit margin per session? | ||

| I big bet is the second part of the limit you are playing. In a $5-$10 limit hold'em game a big bet is $10 ... in $20-$40 it is $40, etc. | ||

| You should be making quite a bit more than a single BB/hr. when things are running good for you. You need that for times when nothing seems to be working. See how your average looks after a year of playing, so that there may be enough time to factor in the sessions from hell. A month of running badly can make you think about looking at the help wanted section of the paper, even if you were previously running over the game. One BB/hr. is just a benchmark, something to let you know if you can really play the game full time. | ||

| Thanks for the feedback, I certainly intend to log much more than 100 hours of play, to determine where I am at. It seems to be the consensus here that at least 1000 hours of measured play is necessary to determine what level you are at. Thanks Bill A | ||

| If you put your sessions in on pokercharts.com it'll tell you not only how much you are making per hour, but the statistical probability that you are within +/- $5 of your real earnings. | ||

| Indeed. Earlier this year I had my poker salary around $65/hour and based on more than 100 hours at the time. Right now my 2003 earning are worse than they would be if I were cutting sugar cane in havana during that time. You need to be able to mix the good and the bad, shake them, and distill out a profit. To be sure that you've had your fair share of both you need to put in a lot of time. | ||

| 100 hours is not really enough to be sure of what your hourly rate is. You need a long run to determine that, and unfortunately, the long run is really looooong. To give you an idea, I play online and use a program to track my results. I have over 900 hours logged and the program states that I have a "95% chance that my true win rate is between -0.72 to 1.26 BB/hour". That's quite a spread! I'll have to play a couple more years before I get that confidence level to anything approaching a real rate. | ||

| Are you using Pokertracker to give you this? I am almost at the 1000 hand limit and am wondering if it is worth the $$. Been impressed so far... | ||
