Any Comments for a beginner?, pt_Gatsby, 20. Jun 2003 23:16

Hi all,

I just recently started playing online - I played casually with friends and a few times in the casino and enjoyed it, but never really got into it. For the last bit I have been reading every piece of strategy I can find and am trying to translate it.

I played in one of the small ($3 entrance fee) no limit Holdem tournaments at pokerstars determined to see what I can do to improve in a more competitive environment. Anyway, I kept notes for pretty much everything I did and even took screenshots at the major points in the game so that I could look over the table after all was said and done.

I guess the first question is - Is there anything else I can do along those lines? I kept my hand record, though I meant to catch my stats, I did forget. I also kept track of how I managed to stay afloat...

I posted my summary up at Yahoo, if anyone desires to see a brief synopsis. ( http://www.geocities.com/pt_gatsby/index.html )

Basically, I think I don't really understand the changes at three points in the game;

When you have the lower amount of chips and blinds are oppressive, you have to play aggressive on hands, I presume? This was never a concern to me in the last tournament, so it didn't come up.

When you have the mid-range, how do you deal with the 'pot buying' from the weaker hands... and how do you deal with the domination from the largers? (ie: 1000 low, you at 4000, high at 12,000)

And of course, the dominant chip position. How much should this influence you? I noticed the winners being quite aggressive on a near-random basis. It seems to keep them ‘above blinds’ – is this an actual strategy that works? There seemed to be very little slowplay. Perhaps the goal is to force the weaker chips into playing sub-optimal hands since they could absorb the loss?

The last question I have is on my final hand, which in hindsight I probably misplayed.

~4000 chips for me, ~6300 for the opponent, turns into heads up.

My hand: QTs
- KQx comes up
Basicly, we both throw a lot of money in - This is where I should have folded, I believe. However, the table had been playing some pretty awful stuff, so I stayed. (down to 1600 chips)
- K gets turned up, I call (down to 600 chips)
- Q gets turned up, I go all in for 600

He has the third king, (KKKQQ vs my QQQKK). The question is, at this point in the table, should I have pushed that hand? I was overly aggressive in the beginning, forcing me to either accept the weaker chip position or play it out... I took a screenshot right before, the final one.

Anyway, I would be most appreciative of any comments... I understand the most important thing is to keep careful watch over what you do wrong, but I'm not sure what that is yet! I'll probably play in several coming up, if anyone else is playing in them!

Hey pt_Gatsby,
I am new to UPF and by no means a scholar of the magnitude of some posters, but I will try to answer with the limited info you provided. The biggest question I have would be position. QTs would be much weaker if you were EP and I have no idea of the pre-flop betting. Also, after flop (which I'm not sure of the betting pattern) you were already beaten by many hands (KK, AK, KQ, AQ, QJ) . Unless it was Kh xh, I would have dumped. I hope that helps. I could be entirely wrong if position was different. I wouldn't stake my claim on QT unless my name was Varkonyi (sp?)

Thanks for your response! Fortunately it didn't bother me to lose , I'm far more concerned about my flawed evaluation of it

I also wrote it out wrong, now that I went through my hand history!. I wrote down a similar hand at the same table and got it confused with my last hand. Too many slips of paper, probably better to rely on the hand history.

This was the exact hand, removing a lot of extra detail (ie: everyone folded but those below, BB called, I was SB. BB then folded on the first bet.)

*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to pt_Gatsby [Jd Qc]
raiseadollar: calls 200
pt_Gatsby: calls 200
Varenne: checks
*** FLOP *** [3d Qd Ks]
Varenne: checks
raiseadollar: bets 200
pt_Gatsby: calls 200
Varenne: folds
*** TURN *** [3d Qd Ks] [Kh]
raiseadollar: bets 1200
pt_Gatsby: calls 1200
*** RIVER *** [3d Qd Ks Kh] [Qh]
raiseadollar: bets 1800
pt_Gatsby: calls 1800 and is all-in
*** SHOW DOWN ***
raiseadollar: shows [Kc Ts] (a full house, Kings full of Queens)
pt_Gatsby: shows [Jd Qc] (a full house, Queens full of Kings)

I was small blind at the time, so I felt the QJ was worth testing. Overvalued the pair with K showing, I think.

The current table position was 200/100, ante 25. my chips were exactly 3425, raisedollar's were 6648, high at the table was 11775.

He was opposite me, so playing nearly opposite the button.

Hey Gatsby-

With QJo in the SB, it's ok to see the flop as long as you can limp in. But remember, in EP, QJo is essentially trash. You're not just looking for help on the flop, but you must also have nothing that hurts. Seenig the K on the flop could very well be grounds for a check-fold.

However, it is not unheard of to force your opponent to tip his hand by betting out with second pair, if he raises, he has top pair with a high kicker or two pair, and you can fold. Don't do this a lot though, as it will cost you in the long run.

Anyway, your hand is a good example of why you don't want to play such holdings in EP. You end up put in a position where you have something that wants you to feel confident, but because you are UTG, you can't feel out where other players are. If you are in LP with this hand, your opponent bets-out and you can avoid getting sucked into this mess.

Thanks! I figured it was a mistake afterwords (looking over the odds and the table with time to spare). I'll just have to make sure I don't repeat the same mistake again.

Hey Gatsby,

it's great that you're taking an interest in poker and if you're still quite confused as to why certain plays work and what exactly is wrong with some of the other plays, than I strongly suggest that you read up more. Invest in some really good books for the beginner and get a couple of tournament books as well; ones that go into detail on your preflop play and how they discuss some of their own strategies that help them to get a more understanding and read over their opponents.

It's very difficult to go into this game blind, that would be a real hard task for anyone to overcome, so study up more so you can allow yourself to comprehend more of the real basics of the game like what starting hands are best, discussion of post-flop play and what to do in certain situations (like flopping second pair and things of that nature). It might remove some of the doubts that you are experiencing right now.

Anyway.....good luck to you in your new found interst. All the best.
