What attitude can do..., Guru, 20. Jun 2003 14:53

I just wanted to make this post to talk about the consequences of being a jerk in poker and see what others think.

I woke up in the morning and wandered over the computer to play a little poker. I decide to enter a sit-n-go and realized quickly that I had made a mistake. I just wasn't into it that morning for whatever reason. So I wasn't really paying attention and wasn't do well at all. I actually started reading and doing a couple of other things while playing and, I admit, a couple of turns in a row I took a little too long to make a decision, though I never timed out. Well, one of the guys was a real jerk that I had played against before and starts reaming me for being a slow*** and starts with other unkind words.

That was his mistake. I knew the player well and I knew that I was better than him. He had played/lucked into a huge chip lead by winning a couple of all-in showdowns early, but he had pissed me off and now my head was in the game. I was upset, told him what a jerk he was and told him that I was going to beat him (despite the fact he had a 3 to 1 chip lead on me). *I realize I was being a child in this instance, something I almost never do. I'm usually quiet and nice.*. He laughed, said it would never happen, then proceeded to go full on tilt as I kept pressuring him into bad decisions and didn't let up until I had every chip.

The point is that if he had kept his mouth shut or been nicer about asking me to keep up, I would probably have stayed zoned out and he could have taken the whole thing. It's certainly a lesson being a nice guy makes it easier to win.

I think the "real" lesson here is everytime you get heads up with someone, visualize them making you angry (Like the waterboy) and take all their chips!!!!!!!

Thanks!

Moz has the market cover for movie quotes, so I try to bring something else to the table.

Hey, I just tried your AOL e-mail address and my message was returned due to a full mailbox. I wanted to arrange a way to contact you regarding meeting tonight. Commerce is only about 10 minutes from the Casino I play at.

I (nor you) want to list a phone number on here, I will need an e-mail address or chat.

please advise ...

Hey Guru,

Yeah, I think your attitude and/or your comments can play a big part in your game.
When you're playing on-line, you will see rude, and just downright obsene comments being typed in quite often and that is because noone can see who these people really are. Now take that person and put him in a real live poker game and I bet his comments will not be as harsh. Yes, there are some who would still proceed to be jerks, but for the most part, I think these players are either just getting their frustrations out or they're trying to throw you off your game. But for whatever reason......It's not only rude, it's downright stupid. (the guy in your game was really not that bright.....was he?)

When you start to lose control over your emotions, whether it be in a live game or at on-line, you start to lose alot of focus and your attitude is more on trying to beat the guy who just punished you, three hands in a row. The best and most positive way to be, is to either, be polite or to sit there and not say a word. I really do believe that most of your average, "just wanna have fun types", would much rather give their chips to the nice guy (you know, the one who consoles them on their "bad beats" and stuff like that), than to lose their money to the real jerk at the table.

How does that 'ol saying go?......................

"You will catch more flies with honey, than you will with vinegar". ($$$$$$$)

The same approach applies in poker....at least for me it does.

Not a bad story Guru. Congrats on your win. You did raise an interesting point in your post - dealing with "cyber punks." It's amazing how many of these you encounter on a daily basis in online poker. Personally, I never take anything that this type of person says seriously. When I play online my own chat contribution is for the most part limited to "nh," "ty" and the occasional "nice 2-outer" or "nice gutshot." I don't believe in berating someone for bad play and find it amusing when some cyber punk initiates something to the point where a "you would never want to run into me in public" pops up in the chat dialogue. I find it amazing how nearly all online pokers are 6'6, 250 and can bench nearly twice their weight. OK, I'm being a bit sarcastic but I'm sure you catch my drift. Yet somehow you took what that guy said and used it as motivation. Good for you. If you really find that to be an effective tool then by all means carry on doing so, but in truth you should never take anything that anyone says behind the safety of a monitor seriously. And all too often I've seen these punks continue heckling fish to the point where he ultimately leaves the table. Thanks for the story.
