Tourney hand everyone wanted me to call, beigs, 20. Jun 2003 13:55

I finally found the history of the hand where my opponent went all in and I folded. It was brought up several times and I couldn't remember the details. So, here it is.

3 players left. Blinds are 250/500. 500/1000 to play.

I hold A8s(hearts) in the big blind. UTG folds. SB raises to 1000. I reraise to 1500. SB caps. I call.

Flop comes 3s Kd 10d. I check. He bets. I call.

Turn is 9c. I check. He goes all in for 790. I folded.

I took a lot of heat for folding but now it feels like I never should have been in the hand at the turn anyway. I don't remember him showing his cards, but my hand history says that he had Ac Ks giving him a pair of Kings. I pretty sure I played the hand incorrectly but I'm not sure why. Any help?

Reading this I got to:

> Turn is 9c. I check. He goes all in for 790. I folded.

I was thinking... is this a raise or check/fold situation? Why just call can't make runner runner flush. Only 3 outs against the King.

But that game was going so fast my head was spinning... your's must have been ready to explode.

So how were you able to find out HIS cards? I would not think that would be accessible regardless!

I got my last 99 tournament hands from Planet Poker. Most times it says 'folded' under my opponent. This hand it showed his cards. I'm wondering if he showed them during the tournament and I just forgot.

And, yes. My head was spinning. That game was moving way too fast for me. I'm amazed at the recall some people here have for the cards. I only knew the hand everyone was talking about. I couldn't remember what I had, how much was in the pot, how much it was for me to call. I'm baffled that observers remembered. Another one of those skills I have to work on.

Beigs,

I have to say I'm wondering why you were in at the turn, too. With three players to go, I think the A-Xs hand is strong and I agree with the pre-flop strategy of defending your blind against a possible position raise here.

The fact that he chose to cap the action after your re-raise would have me wondering, though. The flop misses you wildly, but is dangerous with some solid cards and two diamonds in it, meaning that there is a real possibility that it improved your opponents hand. Checking after the flop indicates weakness (or a trap) to your opponent and he bets into you. I'd have to say I would have released the cards right there instead of making the second call. You would have needed runner, runner for the straight, had no shot at the flush, and was hoping for the board to pair your ace, which still may have had you behind. It seems like chasing at this point and the last call seems like a wasted bet to me.

That's just how I see it, but you certainly did well in the tourney, so you know you were playing solid that day. Good job.
