Many players I know are anal about taking poker notes on the online sites... I find that most players play varies so much (for that matter it doesn't even have to be the same person) based on mood, chip position, alcohol consumption ect....that the notes cause me to rely on them too much and ignore my current thought process....Does anyone else feel the same way????.....Thoughts...Opinions!!!

Just like B&M experience, I find that the notes really only become helpful when you have played against a particular opponent a number of times and are familiar with their style. Mostly, I use the notes features to denote players that (1) can't be bluffed out of pots, (2) CAN be bluffed out of pots, (3) players who raise the flop with a 4-flush/up-down, (4) players who will play any two suited cards.

I find that these 4 things help me to value bet more when i can and also save me bets by not bluffing into some people.

I agree that to much note taking would be distracting. I have only been playing online for a short time. I keep track of money won or lost each session. I also might take down some names of players who are real good players or of course who are total fishes. But I usually don't keep track of the moves I am making and the position, etc am making them from. I would rather concentrate on the game in front of me then worry to much about taking notes. I know some people take a lot of notes and if that works for them that's great. Just one opinion.

I have a saying ... "Let's see them do it twice".

If I see someone turn over a 4-8 with a board of A-Q-4-9-Q, I might make a note of it. I won't "rely" on that info until I see them do it twice.

NOW ... if I see them do something similar at a later date, I will refer to my notes to confirm the are nuts!!!

I usually use my "player" notes to help log trends.

... But, I also think even the biggest fish in the sea is capable of making a good move, every now and then. Never underestimate your opponent. Especially the really stupid ones.

I do use player notes for plays that are repeated, like people who chase runner runner flushes or make poor out of position plays repeatedly. However I've also run across players who move down in stakes to try new strategies that appear weak and move away from them again later. So relying on notes is not always a good thing.

I also make plenty of notes about strong aspects of players' games. I find that relying on these positive notes about their game helps me far more.

Roy I don't take any notes at all, people play different every day. If you pay attention to the game you can till which players are loose, tight and on tilt after afew hands. The realy bad ones are imprinted in your memory without notes. Play in the present.

Hi Roy-- I agree on the anal aspect of note taking in general. Since you can't see the player it might be a brother, wife, etc so the notes are
useless. There is so much mobility in online play that it would seem concentrating on the play at hand would be more useful. Absent the visual clues/tells you pick up from a player in B&M, you have a different
set of reads online.

Though they are important and helpful to a degree.....I still think you need to take them with a grain of salt sometimes. If you're a solid/pro type player than your play may not vary that often (you'll be consistent with your strong and solid approach). But if you're the average type, your moods and emotions may come into play alot more often and that alone can cause what you have jotted down about this player to become a "little-off base". If there are several people playing under the same account then the notes that you keep may not be giving you the proper information- everyone plays differently.

Yes...I take notes, but I try to look at each play as objectively as I can regardless of what notes I may have jotted down about this player.
I would refer to the notes as more of a minor reference but I wouldn't read them as if they were Bible or anything. Just a small reminder that I keep in the back of my head but I won't let it alter my thinking from making good decisions..
