| Stdioh's response to the "Funny Tourny" thread got me thinking of TJ's all-in play with 77 the other night. I think he had around $58k in chips and the blinds were at T1k ante, and T3k and T6k blinds, so it cost you T10k to sit out a round. I for one thought that he didn't have to play so fast at that point (he said in his interview that he woke up and told himself he had to go all-in with the 1st pair he got). Am I wrong thinking that he could have waited another round or two and tried to get a better hand? I hate to think critically of his play because he is such a top notch player, but it is still bugging me. Thoughts? | ||

It is the first (or second) hand, on a new day, at the final table of a tele-taped tournament. TJ is a respected player. People saw him play from a very similiar situation in 1999 to get three outed by Jesus Ferguson. TJ wasn't playing the hand to show it down, he was playing it to win the pot right there. I believe that he considered all of these factors AND his cards AND probably some other factors before he made that move. It was a good move, it just didn't work out. I believe he got busted by QQ, right? So, if he held JJ instead of 77 would it have been a better situation? I doubt it. Any pocket pair Jacks or above will probably call, given they have a large enough or a small enough stack. Middle stacks have the most to lose here; somebody with 2 or 3 times TJ's stack. In the first hand on a new day most players are fairly rested and are thinking about playing thier best game and not getting busted or crippled by a dumb call. I think TJ saw this as his opportunity and seized it. It just didn't work out that day. Paul Stine College Station, TX | ||

| Paul- Good points. I hadn't thought of the "fresh new day" factor and TJ's reputation. On thinking of what you and noiseboy said, I have changed my mind about it. Thanks, Steve | ||

| He probably just wanted to make a move before he got so short-stacked that doubling up wouldn't help him that much. The advantage of moving all-in with the sevens is that you will often win the pot right there, as people will sometimes fold pairs higher than yours, like 88, 99, TT's and big cards like AQ rather than commit a large amount before the flop. Of course, you are taking the chance that someone will wake up with a premium pair and then you are pretty much doomed unless you spike the set. | ||
