Bankroll Management - rehashing an old topic, beigs, 20. Jun 2003 06:58 | ||

| I started playing online a month or so ago with 25 bucks in an account. The idea being that I gradually increase that to a point where any amount above X I would use to help my day to day life. the rest I would continue to use for poker. Fortunately for me, the prize money from the tournament actually gives me a flexible bankroll. But I never set what my X amount is. My question is, how does one determine how much they should keep in their poker bankroll and how much does one take out to pay for bills and women? ;) I've read in several places that good poker players don't use winnings for their daily life. they just use to to play poker. But I'm currently of the opinion that, 1)I'm not a very good poker player yet and 2)that sort of defeats the purpose of making money. Any thoughts? Thanks, Beigs | ||

| Didn't win. Just came up sevens a few times and finished well. Until I money in the next one, I'm chalking this up to beginners luck and spending my days figuring out what I did well. | ||

| Beigs- Again, congrats on your high finish in the tourny. Well done. I struggle with this one too as why win the $$ if you are never going to spend it. However, what I have decided is that I started playing an online limit (3/6 for me) with about 200 BB's to make sure that I could handle the swings. From there, I have set an upper limit of 400 BB's to have in my "poker fund". Anything over that I can spend as I wish. This way, assuming I am a consistent winner, i can enjoy some of the spoils of winning and still have a very healthy bankroll in case the dreaded losing streak hits. I think you should try and figure out what # of BB's you think are necessary or you to do the same and then set your own upper boundry. Anyway, it has helped me mental account for winnings and also let me dip into my winning on occassion for some fun. Good luck, Steve P.S.- Don't sell yourself short as a player either. You are way ahead of the majority out there by trying to improve and your high finish in the tourny proves that you have a bright career ahead of yourself. | ||

| Thanks, shorn. Good advice. I'll have to figure out if I want to move up limits (been playing 25cent-50cent) and plan accordingly. beigs | ||

| I play on Ultimatebet. When my confidence gets higher I'll head to AC or the Indian casinos in Connecticut. I started playing on Planet to get used to the interface but I don't know if I'll stay there. It was hard for me to focus when I was playng ring games on Planet. | ||

| Only you can determine what your X amount is. However, you need to ask yourself what you are trying to accomplish by playing poker. If it is just for fun and relaxation, you might not need as much in your account as if you were a serious player. If you are a serious player, are you looking to move up in limits? If so, you might want to be saving everything. The idea being the more you save, the faster you'll get to your next level, the more money you'll make -- hypothetically at least. One more thing... never ever use the words bankroll and women in the same sentence together. Especially when it applies to poker. (a little light humor) | ||
