| I got the chance to meet Phil Hellmuth today when he did his very first book signing in his home town of Madison Wisconsin, where i reside. He seemed nervous at first but eventually calmed down during his speech and was pretty funny. For all those that said he is an ego maniac or brat or etc etc he really didn't come off that way. However, during Q&A i decided to test him and asked "what do you think of Robert Varkonis 2002 WSOP win?" The whole room broke out laughing and Phil thought for a second, then answered the question entirely about shaving his head. All in all though, he seemed like a good guy, and he signed every book there. | ||

| I think he is a great player when he's at his best. He takes losing so badly; however, I can totally understand why people think he's a whiny little bitch. Kudos on asking him about Varkony, I would've loved to see that! My take on the 2002 WSOP is that the poker gods, hating hubris as they do, wanted to take Phil Hellmuth down a few notches. ;) | ||

| Phil is a great tenement player....He is VERY intense and high strung and it affects him emotionally when he plays...As a person, I don't think he is a bad guy. But I do think he should alter his behavior in public as he is a high-profile player on the poker circuit and should have respect for the responsibilities that the position carries. Roy Cooke on 19. | I had one encounter with Phil Helmuth.....several years ago at the tournament at the Taj Mahal in AC, I was standing on the sidelines watching him play at one of the final tables. They stop the tournament for a dinner break, he gets up out of his chair, walks past me and steps right on my foot! Now mind you, this is a preeeety big guy here who was wearing really big shoes and not so much of an apology came out of his mouth. I thought he broke a toe or something, that's how hard it was! But, Noooooo, he just kept on walking. And I also have witnesed some of his cry baby behavior and let me tell you, not only do I think he's a goofball (not to mention....rude), I think he is totally unprofesional and his comments prove it too many times when he sits down in a ring game. But hey......that's just my opinion!!!!!! And on that note....good night all and good luck! P.s. (enjoy the book, seriously). Although I may not think much of this guy personally or should I say, from what I have observed...he still is a good poker player (especially his N/L play), and I'm sure his book will still be a good read. 4 POKER | ||

He stresses aggressiveness, but does not give an equal amout of discussion to folding. Folding should still be a big part of your game if you follow his stradegy. You can't JUST raise the top ten hands til the river and expect to win. You need to learn who you can raise and who you should fold to. The book mentions the animal types, but to really apply the stradegy YOU must be able to correctly categorize your opponents. I've adopted most of his stradegies and find it to be working. His very aggressive play took me a while to get used to, but now i see how beneficial it is. I also notice that when other players use his stradegies (similar to Krieger's beginner No Limit Tournament stradegies) they tend to do well, when applied correctly. It is also hard to defend against someone who is very aggressive with good hands. mark | ||

| I just saw the 2002 WSOP on T.V. today (part 1 of 2 of the final table action), and i was stunned at how polite Robert Varkonis was. I've never seen or heard of someone being so nice and considerate in any poker game. Too many players could learn something from him on how to act like a professional (and he is an amature!). On another topic, i haven't seen the WPT because it's not aired in my area, however, i do get to see the Poker Million and it is my impression these two have a similar set-up, with no audience. The WSOP is sooo much more exciting to watch. The crowd roars and players jump up and run into the audience in the middle of hands. The player's wives are screaming and other players have cheering sections. That is what POKER needs to become a spectator sport, not the sterile, emotionaless environment that the Poker Million and WPT ( i think) provide. mark | ||
