BAD LUCK or I SUCK??, DallasPokerFan, 19. Jun 2003 07:13

Man, I have been getting my arse kicked lately! I look back at my play, and I feel like I can honestly say that:
* I haven't chased any hands (well, 1-2 a session, but I've always done that)
* I have played straight-up .. played good pocket cards
* No stupid raises or failures-to-raise

It just seems like I flop nothing lately .. A-Q suited flops 9-6-7 no suit matches, etc. And, when I do, it seems like I get rivered. Last night, a guy stayed with nothing (no flush or straight draw) through 3-4 raises with me, and then he rivered me with his only out. Urgh!

So, is this just bad luck or do I suck? It has been extended, like the last 4-5 sessions and tourneys.

Methinks its more bad luck, things like this happen. I'm assuming all your play has been online. In my style of play, one thing I've had to do is play all my good flops super fast. Many times when I slow play a little or try to squeeze out a little extra profit, some knucklehead will get me on the river with junk-junk offsuit. If they aren't completely convinced they're drawing dead, they'll hang around till the end... because they've been rewarded often enough by doing this to hang around. I've been much more apt to muck post-flop, play extremely tight in early position, and raise more with good flops in late position. But this is just me.

Chin up, bro. You'll pop out of this rut soon enough.

There's always lots of talk about good starting cards. Funny thing is that when I REALLY started to understand which hands were winners and which were losers, I somehow started losing money. Thought I was getting unlucky, but then I stopped, analyzed, and found my leak.

I was thinking to myself that just because I had better STARTING cards than my opponents (low limit fishery) that I should be winning the hand. Then I figured this out: at the lowest limits, don't bother putting moves on people. They have no idea what you're doing and no idea that they should be folding their garbage. They'll stay just to see.
My leak was that I wasn't folding when the flop missed me, just because I knew my cards were better than my opponents.

This is just something that I found myself doing. Not saying that you are, but your specific mention of starting hands and missing flops made me wonder if you were dumping your hand on said missed flops. Also, I have no idea at what limits you are playing.

I'm kind of new (6 months) and don't know that I'm being helpful. But there it is.

Better luck to you,
SKinner

Skinner-

This is a great point. AKh may look great pre-flop and very wrell may be the best hand, but when the flop comes 678 spades, it is crap. Many players (experienced one's included) do serious damage to their bankroll by overplaying good starting cards that did not improve. The best players (and the consistent winners) are those that not only recognize when tey are ahead, but get out when they are behind with little or no chance to win. Those bets/calls saved really add up at the end of the day.

The best way to win at poker? FOLD A LOT and when you do play, play aggressively when you are ahead and (more importantly) SAVE BETS when you feel you are behind.

one thing that has gotten me and i'm sure many others in trouble is the notion that if you raise pre flop, you can't fold. pride can be very dangerous in poker.
