Big $ tournaments, MozMan, 18. Jun 2003 10:40

Hey, do any of your B&Ms run BIG $ tournaments? Mine normally runs tourneys with buy-ins that range from $40 to $125 (plus fee) and payouts that range from top 10 to top 20... but last weekend, they offered a $1K buy-in winner take all NLHE tourney.

When the first announced it, I was talking with a floorman about it, and he said they were just trying it out to see what kind of response they would get. They were expecting maybe as many as 20 buy-ins. I showed up to stand the rails and see how it would come off, and they had 44 buy-ins!

Now they are saying they will offer it once a month. I spoke with that floorman last night and suggested they run some sattlelites before each tourney; one table, $100 buy-in, winner gets a seat. He seemed to think it was a good idea.

I never expected to see that kind of action here... always thought I would have to go to Vegas for the real big $ tourneys...

Hey Moz,

They run a big tournament every year in AC where I am from. It's at the Taj Mahal and it starts somewhere in December. The buy-ins in the beginning of the tournament are about $300 + entry fee, and then towards the middle of the tournaments, the buy-ins go up to $500 +, and the final event (NL hold-em, of course) has a buy-in fee of $7,500 + entry fee.

(compared to the WSOP that I had recently observed, I guess this would pale in comparison, but nonetheless it does attract players from all over the country, and Europe for that matter).

The winter time is the perfect time here to host one of these evens because it's so cold out and when the weather is not as nice, the room tends to be a lot less busy. So this is a nice break in the off season.
For about 3 weeks the Taj is jammin' with tons of action; all games and all limits..it's great and every single table is full!

Then after it's all over, the place dies down quite a bit but the weekends are still pretty busy.

Now, The Tropicana in AC spreads weekly tournaments that attract a fair amount of business for them. The buy-ins are not as high (around $100 to $200 or so), and because The Trop is in competition with The Taj, at least these weekly events help them to gain more business. The Trop doesn't have nearly as many games as The Taj does, and I guess because The Tajs' poker room had opened first (by several years), all the other card rooms in AC had suffered a little bit. The action was always at The Taj. In fact....the only card room that has really succeeded next to The Taj, was The Tropicana.

Sometimes the smaller card room tries harder, better perks, real nice staff, and so on....and I will admit, The Tropicana is a more "homey" and relaxed place to play.

But yes.....IMO, hosting tournaments, whether they be major events or just weekly events, they will attract more business....I think it's a great marketing idea for any card room to take part in.

Even if you don't participate in the tournaments, the side action will be a lot stronger.

As you probably already know from watching WPT, all of the casinos in near me in So Cal run big money Tournaments every month. You can see the full list, plus dates, on Cardplayer.com.

Course, that doesn't do you any good being in AZ.

The casino I go to, does a Tourney every Friday night. It only costs $60 which includes your starting chips, entrance fee, 1 rebuy and add-on. (Multi re-buys are optional) First prize is always about $5000, and they pay down to 18th.

If you every plan to head this way to play for the weekend, let me know.
