| I returned to the scene of the crime today and my chalk outline was still underneath the table--I sat down with two players who had witnessed my tilt-a-whirl carnival act last night and within two hours they realized that I was playing super-tight this afternoon and they proceeded to bust me up like a baby Harp Seal; my group 1 & 2 hands were ultimately rendered impotent against baby pairs and back-doors or simply folded on, garnering me nothing more then dog-sh** pots and smug smiles. They read me like a shampoo bottle. How long and how much money does it generally take before you start to realize some kind of consistent profit? I am well aware that three months of experience is a touch premature to begin winning, but at what point should you stop making a complete fool of yourself and start playing gin rummy with your grandma again? | ||

| It took me about six lots of $50 buy ins, a year -18 months of playing ( on line ) for about 7 hours a week, lots of reading of good books ( Slanksy, Lee Jones etc..) a lot of research on both this site and at Mike Caros University site ( mainly his lectures ) and i am now consistantly beating games up to $2-4. If you want some good experience on line i would go for $5 sit and go tournys as you get to see a lot of hands for your money and you can often win them by just playing tight and only playing good cards. Keep it up dont throw in the towl it is a great game and you get paid to play your hobby fantastic !!!! Chasepoker | ||

| Man, I feel for you. Your post was great and I can tell you that your gift with words will come in handy when you describe your wins in the future. I looked at your post and said "Is the glass half full or half empty?" I'd like to give you another perspective and present your situation in a different light. Please bear with me. So you went on tilt and imitated the Leaning Tower of Pisa for a few hours. It happens to the best of us. The key difference is that you "know" you went on tilt and did not blame: (1) The Dealer, (2) the other players, (3) the online playing site or casino, (4) the poker gods/goddesses, or (5) the fact you were not wearing your lucky shoes. You see it, and reacted to it. The clear sign of objectivity. Objectivity is key. Next great sign, ... you took action to address it. You tightened up. Probably too much but after the wildman tilt, not completely unexpected. The real problem is not the tilt, you have addressed that, the problem is the effect tilt has had on you. I have a quotation in my Journal dated Dec 14th, 2002, from a great player on tilt: "It's not how you play the hand where you take the bad beat. It's how you play the NEXT one." Julian "The Kid" Gardiner. It will take a while for players to realize that partyday is over when playing against you. When you returned to your game after tilt, did you verbally announce that "tilt day" was over? Whatever the reason, you feel they know. Even better, ... you have analyzed it out. they do. Did you realize that the fact that you know, that they know, is a critically important advantage? It is, and you have the upper hand. The glass is not half empty, it is half full. How can you use the fact that they are playing against the "tight Hudson"? You know, but here are a few suggestions. Think about what your opponents are doing to their poker to exploit your tighter frame of mind. They are betting "baby pairs & paying to draw on inside str8s"? Ok, sounds like punishment day for your opponents in the medium term to me, and it is time to show them how expensive such a course of action can be. They give you little pots whenever you show any sign of strength? Sounds like it is time to give Sklansky's "Game Theory & Bluffing" chapter in the TOP a reread and trot out some random bluffing. Scoop up some of those pity-pots with 2 7 offsuit and 3 6 offsuit. Sooner or later they will figure out that they are no longer folding against strength, but simply giving you money. A timely "What a waste of an AA!" after you collect a microscopic pot with 7 2 offsuit would be appropriate. Don't knock those little pity-pots, ... just make sure you collect lots of them and some of them with anything ... :) Be observant for the point at which they abandon this "anything against the tight Hudson" strategy. They will, and then tight play will send them back to their exploiting play, and then you get to beat them up even more. Sounds like fun, and the new skill you have a chance to try and learn is determining when they are slinging trash and when they are playing soundly. You are taking the position that "they" are in the driver's seat. IN FACT, ... You are! Read your note and drain out the angst (tilt inspired despair). You have analyzed what your opponents are doing ... Congratulations! Now go out and use what you already know and slowly de-bone these guys. Hope this point of view is helpful. flintsword | ||

| Thanks a millions FW...enormous appreciation for taking the time to respond with such an insightful and encouraging post...I think that I'll take a break for the next month and re-read my pile of books and play my Wilson software...I should be ready to pounce on those condescending and poorly-dressed pricks by then... they are admittedly more advanced than me but I have far keener sense of fashion and I can always become a better card player...and not that I really subscribe to astrology but I suppose being a Leo gives me the guile appearing lethargic when I am simply loafing around waiting to eat... By the way it's a shame that you're not a 5'10 brunette with large breasts, small scruples, and a penchant for the Giants...the best things are life are indeed hot pink (J. McManus). | ||
