| Last night after not playing a hand of online poker in nearly a month, i entered a 20 dollar sit n go at paradise. I made almost all my onlien profit at 10 dollar sit n gos and played a number of 20s, but for some reason could never get 1st prize for 100 bucks. Last nite i was on fire, i made all the right moves it seemed and incorporated everything i learned on here about the 10 man tournys, so i'd like to thank everybody for the help. When it came down to the final two it was about 3000-7000 in his favor. I managed to battle it to the opposite way and then a very familiar hand (if you've seen the 2000 WSOP) came up. I was dealt A9o in the BB. (blinds are 500 and 250) opponent just calleed and i raised 700, he pushed all in for about another 2100 and i debated for a long time. I decided i was outplaying him now and to take a shot, he flips over, OH CRAP AQo. Flop is 7 A 3, i know im screwed now but WAIT turn is a 9!! River comes 10 and i've finally won one of those damn 20 dollar tournys, and i laughed my ass off, thanks UPF. | ||

| I find that a great number of tournament players really overvalue A9 in no limit heads up. Yes, it is a raising hand, absolutely. It is *not* however a great reraising hand or a hand that you can go all in with under normal circumstances. The problem with A9 is that it is dominated by a number of hands, a dog to a great number of hands, and only a marginal favourite over a few. Lets break it down and look at heads up hands that the raiser could reasonably have: AK->AT = 4 dominators A8->A2 = 7 dominated. So far so good. KQ->JT = 6 hands with you the decent favourite 88->22 = 7 coin flips AA->99 = 7 dominators So right there of the nonpaired hands you have 6 that you lead over slightly, 7 that you dominate, and only 4 that have you dominated. Things look pretty good. Of the paired hands, 7 are coinflips that you will not have to worry about when you hit your hand and 7 have you anyway from drawing slim to in deep deep trouble. All this points to you being able to call. So why not reraise? Well, if you reraise big, unless you're being very very agressive, a reasonable opponent will lose anything but medium and bigger pairs and big aces. Now you'll be facing the following hands that can reasonably call or reraise your reraise: AA->77 AK->AJ KQ Now you are dominated completely by AA,99,AK,AQ,AJ so there are 5 hands that have you in deep trouble. You are a slight favourite over KQ and a slight dog to 88 and 77. To put a long story short, you're in real trouble in this hand and you have a large amount committed. Likewise you've managed to fold off all the hands that you have dominated and that would pay you off...the small aces and small pairs (assuming that you hit the flop). While there are lots of fish who will push all in preflop with 22 and make you feel smart when you call them with 66, the fact of the matter is that you shouldn't be thinking about doing this heads up unless you've got something like QQ+ or AK. Heads up no limit freeze out play, to steal a line from Harry Potter, is an "exact art and subtle science" ... but there are things which generally constitute colouring outside the lines. Unless you've got a particularly strong read on your opponent, don't push your A9 too far. | ||
