| Hey everyone. Just getting started. Is it approprite to write in notebook while playing at tables? Sounds like many do. Is there a proper procedure or does everyone just record away?? After reading quite a few posts, it seems most of you are talking about online which would make my question somewhat mute since obvioulsy you can record everything when playing online. Still, I would appreciate advice on what info to keep, etc. | ||

| 1. Get a tape recorder and walk away from the table every couple of hours or so with things you want to remember. It makes you take breaks and accelerates your learning curve in the process. 2. You should keep track of tendencies of your opponents that you can take advantage of in the future. 3. Start by keeping tabs on the players you most play with, plays that have high edges and plays that have a high frequency of occurrence. Roy Cooke | ||

| Great advice Roy, I especially like, and totally agree with # 3. This will also enable you to be a little bit more discreet opposed to taking notes at the table. 4 POKER | ||

| Hey DJ- I normally keep a piece of paper in my pocket to make quick notes on after each hand. I just do it inconspicuously(sp?) in my lap, and most other players don't even seem to notice... though most of the regulars by now know that I keep notes most of the time. I do back away slightly when I do it to ensure the cameras have a clear view of what I am doing. I don't want them to think I'm stashing cards or anything! :) -Moz "Great. | For got to mention: after the session, I take my notes and transfer them to my notebook. This way I don't have to carry the notebook and I get a chance to mull over everything that happened while I am copying over the notes. I've been thinkin about using my PDA to make notes too... in fact, I should write a program for it that is just for keeping track of poker hands... hmmm... that might be worth something... ;) -Moz "Great. | I'd actually like to look into working on it myself, but I've never written anything for Palm OS and have no idea what it entails. -Moz "Great. I've got a trig midterm tomorrow, and I'm being chased by Guido, The Killer Pimp." | ||

| So... forgive my ignorance. But what kinds of things does one write in notebook? I have a really hard time remembering what my hands were and the betting that took place. Anyone have an example of their notebook entry? beigs | ||

| Beigs, Mozman's approach makes good sense(try that) and also check out Roy Cooke"s post; he listed some very important things that you should be looking for in your game and they will help you alot...especially #3. 4 POKER | ||

| beigs- I try to make some notes about the players (relative position, type of player, big bluffer, can be pushed around, etc) especially if they are players I think I will see again (familiar faces). Then I simply keep track of hands: what my hole cards were, the board, how long I held them, what I beat or lost to. If I tried anything fancy, unusual or odd, then I will make a note of that too. -Moz "Great. I've got a trig midterm tomorrow, and I'm being chased by Guido, The Killer Pimp." | ||

| That is actually an excellent question. (Don't you feel special now? Not in a short bus kind of way either) Here are a couple of examples of things I recommend ... 1) Bullet points that you pick up from books, forums, articles, etc, that are worth remembering and re-remembering. 2) Notes on players (if you play with the same players often). Do they play Queen Ten offsuit in early position? Will they lay down a pair to a raise? Do they always raise with the same hands? Etc. 3) Actual hand situations. Make sure you write down everything! All players positions, blind location, chip count, hands (if shown), betting order, etc. *** You can share your hand situations with seasoned veterans to get input on other ways to play the hand. Hope those ideas help. Scrubbie "I'm the one who put the satin in your panties" | ||

| I just finished writing a looooong post under "Mentors", ... you may want to read that, since it deals with notebooks. A notebook for poker should also chronicle your progress and when you read something particularly profound, ... into the notebook! Since I have one of my old notebooks out, I'll throw something out for you to consider. www.findarticles.com/cf_0/m1111/1807_301/68018764/p1/article.jhtml An early notation: "Raising hands: QQ, KK, AA, JJ, TT, AKs, AKo, AQ, 88-99, AJs." Nothing written beside it, I was probably reading a basic book and decided to log this list. (Volume one of my poker journals) here's another one: "There are a total of 1,326 starting hands in Holdem. (52 x 51) = 2,652, but Ac + 2d is the same as 2d + Ac, so we divide 2,652 by 2 to get 1,326." "It is not our abilities that make us who we are - it is our choices that do so." You can ask MozMan what movie that quote comes from, ... I found it interesting for my poker journal Vol. 6 But record your cards and actions in your journal, then go over the game. In red annotate with "shfbf" so you can graphically see the number one problem facing players: they play too many marginal hands. "shfbf" = "should have folded before flop". After you fold, work on calculating pot odds for your opponents. When you see a really interesting play, record it and analyse it. Record in your journal the amazing information that flows through UPF. If you read an article that is particularly good, ... copy it into the jounal. A champions says something seminal, write it down. I hope this helps and good luck ! flintsword | ||

| A friend of mine used to work for 411 and they would constantly be getting calls from people trying to dial 911, but being in a stressful enough situation that they missed hitting the 9 (even though 9 and 4 are about as far away from eachother as you can get). There was a big rigamarole in terms of transferring the call, recording everything, and filing a report. Apparently it isn't uncommon for each 411 operator to get one or more of these calls in a day. Makes you wonder how many people dial 911 in a day and what percentage bungs it up. And then you have to wonder how many people dial 711 before collapsing on the living room floor to be found 3 weeks later. | ||
