| This situation came up earlier today and i was wondering if anyone had any advice. I had the opportunity to play in two different tournaments at roughly the same time. I will only play in one - i find it too hard to study opponents at two different tables. tournys - both are online low limits No Limit Hold'em A. approx 35 entrants. Payout approx. 40 20 12 9 5. Buy -in $1.($50 added to the prize pool by the site) I've won 2 of these in the past and didn't place in about 5. B. 10 entrants - Pay out 50 30 20. Buy-in $10 + 1. i've won 2, placed in 2 more, and didn't place in 1. Tournaments are on different sites, both of which are fairly new to me. The profit for 1st place is the same in either tournament. I don't know too many of the players at either site and I feel pretty confident in my abilities agaisnt either structure. The buy in amount does not matter as i have sufficient bankrolls at both sites and these are the only 2 tournaments available at the time. So, should i pay $1, but be up agaisnt a larger field, or pay $11 and only play agaisnt 1 table? How do you weigh the risk vs reward? I played the $10 + 1 tournament. I find that this site has a weaker field and because the players don't change tables, i can get good reads on the players by the end of the tournament. I ended up winning this tournament. mark | ||

| From a basic odds perspective: You have 35 to 1 odds to win 40 to 1 on your investment. You have 10 to 1 odds to win 5 to 1 on your investment. From an odds perspective, the big tourney is paying you better. That said, I'll usually play the smaller table trying for the bigger money. I tend to think my play is good enough to get me into a money spot, which has been the case recently. I played four ten player tourneys today and won two of them. Depends on your skill level. If you consider yourself a good player, you may want to try for the bigger money, cause you win more and you take less time doing it. If you're not as good a player, the bigger tourney is more profitable for you. - C - | ||

| psuasskicker has a good analysis from the point of view of odds, so I will take a shot at another perspective. If you are playing these tournaments, it is, IMO, with two objectives in mind: (1) To improve as a player, and (2) to win the $$ in first place. I put "to improve" first because it automatically leads to the second, in the long term. Both of these tournaments are relatively low limits, so really, a buck more or less is a moot point, in the long term. So, it comes down to your objectives in poker. If you want to "fleece the low limit players", pick the easy table. If you want to gain the experience and knowledge so you can play and win at a higher limit ($10 tables to start, then $15, $25, $50, $100 tables as your skill level goes up), consider picking instead a table where you can measure your performance, improve, and head for greener pastures, where the sheep eat better, resist, and are always on to give you a (pardon the pun ...) "Baaaaaaaa d Beat". flintsword | ||

| I wouldn't bother playing in the $1 tourneys at all unless you need the practice. They just don't pay out enough to be worth the time nomatter how good you are an how bad your opponents are. | ||
