stay away from small/middle pairs deep in tourneys, jdsalinger, 14. Jun 2003 12:09

arrrrgh well I usually play sit n go or 2 table tourneys and have been doing quite well but of course seeing the prizes of large tourneys I've been giving it a shot the last week. Now I've played the (1)100+9, (1) 50+5, (4)30+3, (4) 20+2, (2) 10+1 . Entries vary anywhere from 100 to 300 players so the payouts for 1st 2nd or 3rd are pretty good. Well I started out the week playing a 10+1 tourney and took a 3 way even split for nearly a $600 dollar profit for 4hrs. Easy it seems but of course in the big tourney $100 tourney I'm in with above the average number of chips. already in the money but I'm sitting on the cutoff with 88. Blinds are getting big not really large enough to justify taking any real chances. semi-stupid players on the blinds which I should have heavily heavily considered before raising it. I make 5 times the blinds to go, SB really loose calls BB also really loose reraises 10x the blinds. Both of use call and we see a flop of 235 rainbow. SB checks BB bets the pot. Been a really aggressive player with top pair. At this point I put him on A5 or AK/AQ I reraise all in and put him on a decision. Get called with A5suited turn makes him four flush and my 88 doesn't have one of his suits so I'm f!@#ed at this point if an A,5,2 or diamond comes. 5 rivers and I'm gone. Make a measily profit but seeing as how 1st paid about ~$8000 I put too much into a coin flip hand. Next is the $50 tourney first is ~$3000 2nd ~1800 so no chump change for me. Again I'm in the money only 26 players left get 77 button (little below the average number of chips) raise it only 4 times the blinds. A guy who goes all in with any Ace goes all in. I figure and hope Ace-wheel card suited so 1 overcard. I call for some stupid reason he flips A2spades. I feel ok flop comes KQ2 turn is a Q and river a K. I'm gone again a small pair. Stupid me again throwing in large amounts where I'm a slight favorite or could be a big underdog. Tough when I come up against a really loose player and am pretty sure I've got the edge. Anyways a couple of the $30 and $20 tourney went a similar route and I've yet to make a big score. Always stuck in the 10-18,19-27 which doesn't pay worth crap but that's my fault playing crap that maybe a small fav or a big dog. Well I always seem to do better in the 1 or 2 table sit n gos. Placed 2nd twice a 2 table 100+9 tourney at stars and 1st and 2nd in a 100+8 tourney at partypoker so that eased the pain. Anybody with any advice? Or should I just stick with the sit n go's and no look for the big score.

Small and middle pairs are a big part of NL Hold Em tourneys. However they should be played very differently in different situations. I'm not really a big fan of calling raises with them when you don't have to, but I don't mind making the initial raise with them. Other than that small/middle pairs should be limped in with for the minimum hoping to flop a set, or raised all-in before the flop in desperation situations or when you have a huge chip lead and can afford the risk.

The problem with small pairs is the in between decisions, the smaller the pair the tougher the decision. Let's assume for arguements sake that the typical NL raising hand is pocket 7s or AJs. And let's further assume you have pocket 6s and there is a moderate raise before you.

If the player has AJs-AKs you are a slight favorite, if the player has 77-AA he is a 4-1 favorite, if he has A2s-A5s you are a 2-1 favorite. Realize your pocket pair has more value before the flop than it will after, since you can be guaranteed most of the time that there will (a) be one or more over cards (b) you won't flop a set.

Perhaps a good rule of thumb for NL tourneys is to try to limp in for the minimum with 22 thru 66, or to raise with them when you're either (a) desperate or (b) a chip leader. This will need to be modified more aggresively when antes and blinds consume a bigger % of your stack size. However if I'm short stacked I'd rather go All-In with 33 than A10s, since the odds of someone having a stronger ace OR a pocket pair are much higher than someone else having a pocket pair.

Odds are 13/1 against someone holding a pocket pair, so if you have one there is a good chance you're the only one, although if someone else does have a pocket pair there is a good chance they'll be Ace or Kings ;)

at that stage you can't limp in on anything. you may limp in with AA or KK hoping somebody real aggressive will raise behind you and you can trap them but otherwise it's raise or don't play

I would say you should pay less attention to the strength of your hand and more attention to the behavior of your opponents. You absolutely cannot scare some people out of the pot, no matter how bad things go for them. They consider it a matter of pride to see the hand through to the river, and they'll break you doing it. Get in a lot of hands, but get out when things go wrong.

The way you played would be an excellent strategy against a tight player (aggressive or passive, really), so know who you're up against when you make these decisions.
