Could someone tell me how much of a bankroll you would need to play 20-40 holdem on the internet? Say this is for an average player.

The average player is a loser and therefore no bankroll will be big enough to keep him from going broke.

And now for a serious answer, rather than just a mindless flame:

You need about 100-200 times the big bet. For $20/$40 hold'em, don't even think about it unless you can afford to lose about $4000. And I'm not kidding. I know this seems like a lot, but if you're a long term player, then this is what you need.

Now, if you're asking how much you should buy-in for one game, it should be about 20x the big bet, so sit down with at least $400 in front of you.

Someone above said that if you don't even know enough to know how much to have, you shouldn't play. That person is 100% correct. Start with the lower limits. Otherwise, you're not playing - you're donating.

Rrrgggh... can't figure out how to edit my post.

You need to sit down with $800, not $400. This should also tell you why you need at least $4000, (but more like $10,000) to play right in a game that size long-term.

Find the picture that looks like a pencil, (it should be right above your post).click on that. Your post will come up on your screen and you'll be able to make any changes then.
When you're done, just hit "send message".

I think this (200) is quite low given the volatility of online games.
Without knowing anything about your play and assuming you are a winning player (this is a big assumption) in the 20-40 online games. I would suggest 400 big bets for a stand alone bankroll for online hold em. Mike Caro suggests between 188 and 332 in his bankroll requirements lesson at MCU for the 20-40 limit.

The bankroll requirements that were stated are not high enough for these limits; not if you're playing $20-40 hold-em on-line.
There are tremendous fluctuations in this game/limit and with so many hands being dealt out, the swings will be even greater and the $20-40 game plays more like a $40-80 game.

I know someone who is a decent player who lost thousands over a weekends worth of play and like Player X mentioned, if you're just the average type player(and that is what the poster claimed to be), than any amount would not be sufficient enough.
I also agree with that as well because unless that person had an unlimited bankroll, (which more than likely he doesn't), eventually(and it may not take long to do), that player would indeed go broke.

In order to beat a game and in which your bankroll can withstand the losses that do occur in poker, you must first be better than your opponents. You can't expect to be a winning player when you just fall somewhere in the middle(unless you're playing against players who are much worse than you).
And because this player is looking to play on-line poker, his bankroll will be eaten up even quicker- the fast pace of on-line poker(including the rake), would leave the "average player" in serios trouble.

If you're a solid player, I think the bankroll that you should have would be more around the $8,000 mark. You have to calculate the factor that this game WILL play more true to a $40-80 game and the fluctuations will be even more greater.

But I'll say this,(just as a little word of advice for anyone who is thinking about playing in a high limit game), if you're really not an experienced player and one who shows a regular profit from poker, you really shouldn't be playing in a limit that is that high, unless you have a ton of money in which you don't mind to lose.

If you're just starting out with on-line poker, than maybe you should start out small, just to get a "feel" for the game and the fast pace of it all first, and then when you feel comfortable you can move up.

Good luck to you.
