1st time Vegas player question, Paul40, 13. Jun 2003 20:04

I would like to play the poker game on my next trip to Vegas which relies the least on bluffing, more on non-bluff betting strategies. Not much spontaneous fun I know but I'm a novice and want to get my feet wet before moving onto the bluff-filled games.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Then it's Omaha Hi-Low 8 or better you want. Just play the nuts or a good draw to the nuts on the flop in those low-limit games and you won't have to do any bluffing at all. Now all you have to do is look through the archives here to get comfortable with what's a legitimate starting hand, and you will be prepared. This should be enough to at least hold your own at the lowest limits.

You asked which was the game that would require less bluffing and in my opinion that would be Omaha hi-low.

Although at the much higher limits this would not stand as true, but at the much lower limits, this game is a game where the "nuts" are shown more frequently than any other form of poker.

One of the reasons for that is, this is a split game, and if you try to bluff someone out of the pot, they may very well think that their low hand is good or their high hand is good, so they might be more apt to call you in hopes of getting half the pot.

I'm not going to say that bluffs do not work in Omaha hi-low, because they do- but you have to have a real good feel for the game first, and you also have to have a tremendous read on your opponents.

If you're fimiliar with this game,(and you most certainly have to be if you plan on playing it), then you will also notice that the fluctuations will be realitively low compared to Hold-em.

The Orleans' in Las Vegas spreads a nice low limit Omaha game and they'll be much easier/softer than the ones played at the Mirage and the Bellagio.

Good Luck.

The way you said "the poker game" in your post ... If you are a novice player and if you want to play "the poker game" next time you hit Las Vegas, you may want to play online in a playmoney game at www.partypoker.com or www.paradisepker.com (There are a lot more sites but these two have fairly tame playmoney tables).

In any case, I would recommend a low limit ($1) seven card stud game. You get to see more of your opponent's cards, and for novices, this is comforting. When I started to play, Texas Holdem was just too esoteric and weird, so I played a lot of stud. I occasionally play and it is pure pleasure.

Your opponents are going to bluff, but at lower limits they tend to play their cards. If you go to a poker room in Las Vegas, ask if they have lessons. Many do, they are fun, informal, and freely offered. If you get real lucky, ... the dealer that shows you the ropes will be so entertaining, he/she will make the learning experience a real treat.

Hope this helps Paul40, and good luck. Let us know how you do!
