When to straddle, Kid, 13. Jun 2003 16:32

After reading the post on straddling and everyone coming to the conclusion that it is a terrible play, let me say when the straddle could increase your session long EV.

Straddling makes you look like you are there to gamble, so it helps your table image. A straddle or two during a session can result in getting paid off in situations where you normally wouldn't. The best time to do is in a home game so you don't look like a rock all night and you'll be more likely to get invited back. This works best short handed since you'll be in a lot more situations with marginal holdings that you wouldn't get paid off with a tight image.

Isn't it fair to say that there are other ways to advertise that you are not a rock that don't include the blind raising UTG of a hand?

Among others, playing middle suited connectors from an early position on occasion. Making some loose calls in cheap situations where your implied odds...maybe not being totally profitable...but are still solid. Exposing some of these crappier hands if you're bet out of a pot. Things like that.

Straddling isn't something I'll ever do, image or not. I have other ways of making sure I don't look like a total rock wherever I'm playing.
