How do I find a game?, Heath, 13. Jun 2003 08:53
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
I live in Oklahoma and gambling in almost any form is illegal here. I'm just out of college and really into poker but none of my friends are. Are there ways to find card rooms that "aren't in the yellow pages"? Or any other suggestions to finding games?

Your state doesn't allow any forms of gambling including on-line poker?

Your friends aren't into the game either so you couldn't even muster up a little home game for yourself. (But sometimes there are people who post up on the UPF who are seeking for players to play in home games. Maybe someone will respond to you here so you can get the ball rolling or something).

if you're really into poker that much, then take a trip and visit some of the cardrooms that may be closest to your state. There won't be anything in the yellow pages for you; if it's illegal than it's illegal.

If all else fails...Move!

Good Luck.

Isn't Oklahoma the home of high stakes BINGO?

Try the home game classified section at www.pokerpages.com

BTW, how long have you been sentenced to stay in Oklahoma?

Yes there is bingo. Are there any good card rooms in Texas that you know of?

Online poker just isn't the same. Do most of you feel comfortable playing online?

I'd say that online poker's your best bet right now, given your situation. No, it's not quite the same as live play. It has some disadvantages, including inability to pick up tells, lack of "social" aspect, no one there to serve you drinks, etc. However, there are also a lot of benefits: rake's usually lower, you don't have to toke, you can play multiple tables at once, little to no wait to sit down, a wide variety of limits and games, more hands dealt per hour, play in the comfort of your own home, etc.

A lot of people are a little anxious about online play, because they are worried about legal aspects, cheating, randomization of cards, etc. Most online cardrooms (Paradise Poker, Ultimate Bet, Poker Stars, to name a few) are very reputable; they achieve a high degree of card randomization, their customer support is prompt and withdrawing money from one's account is not a problem. Collusion has been known to take place, but it is not as commonplace as people might think, and many online cardrooms are implementing devices to detect this (players who have been proven to collude are banned from most cardrooms). If you want to learn more about online poker, sign up for Cardplayer's monthly Online Poker News newsletter, or buy Krieger's new book on Online Poker.

I could tell you but then .... well, you know. Just look at the number of Texas posts in the home games forum on pokerpages. That should give you an idea.

I looked at http://www.pokerpages.com/interactive/pokerforum/index.php
under the Home Games | USA forum and the first listing was for a game in Oklahoma. Whattaya know?

I did a search on "oklahoma" and specified the USA forum and got about 10 hits.

I trust on-line poker enough to play it for low stakes.

I've enjoyed everyone's comments on starting a card room. I would never actually do it but its fun to think about.

Well, if you're willing to play in a not so legal house then why not start one? I'm not sure what the laws are like down there, but up here the laws are very soft on not so legal houses, not really enforced, and just as hard on the patrons as they are on the proprietors.

Now, I'm sure that any lawer can tell me that advising you to open your own speakeasy is a no no, so I will say to you that you should not OPEN YOUR OWN CARDROOM. Again, I'm going to advise you not to OPEN YOUR OWN CARDROOM because I could be in big trouble if I told you to OPEN YOUR OWN CARDROOM.

Hell, I'd open one myself if I didn't think the competition would have something unkind to say to me. I don't like confrontations so I wouldn't want to compete with them. But if there were nobody else doing it, you better believe I would be.

Ok stdioh, since we all agree that it's a horrible idea to OPEN YOUR OWN CARDROOM, if one were to indulge the idea alittle further, how would the astute player/proprietor set said 'bad idea' up so as to make alittle dough and encourage decent action? This has come up many times among a few of the players in my area. There are no cardrooms within about 150-200 miles of here, and just consolidating all of the home game action that's constantly going on, would make for a hell of a nice base of players, if one were to be foolish enough to OPEN THEIR OWN CARDROOM. Curious as to a pro's thoughts on the matter...

I feel compelled to jump in here and state that I think that this would be an incredibly bad idea.

You are young. You will (hopefully) live a long time. You are basically looking at a promotion of gambling charge, at least, if things go badly. How might a prospective employer look at that charge on your record?

If your venture was even moderately successful you are looking at having a lot of cash without a way to explain it. Try and hide it (OK, it is called Laundering) and you could be looking at bigger time. In that case you would probably get to know the IRS on a much more intimate level than you (or anyone) would like. Since 9/11 this type of activity is receiving much more scrutiny.

Suppose you want to use your cash to buy a house. If you represent the source of your income on a loan form (and that loan is probably at least partially federally insured) you are looking at federal time. It happens, I've seen it.

Now, that is just from a legal point of view. Suppose there are individuals that already operate games in your area. How are they going to feel about you moving in on their turf? Something else to consider.

Like I said, I think this would be an incredibly bad idea. Like in poker, you should take the long term view of this. It is an easy road to head down and one on which it is very tough to retrace your steps.

So, find a home game or even an illegal game to play in. (Usually the penalty for participation is like a traffic ticket, but your mileage may vary.)
Start a home game if you can't find one. Players will find you.

Oklahoma gambling statutes can be found at

http://govinfo.library.unt.edu/ngisc/reports/ok.pdf

(you'll need Adobe Acrobat to view it.) Chapter 38 is particularly informative and uses the word 'felony' many, many times.

well... the Mouse feels that it would be prudent to point out that this was merely a hypothetical exercise, and not to be taken too seriously. Other things that my fellows and I talk about doing include: Jumping the train and riding it 200 miles to the city, Paparatzzi-style stalking Angelina Joile, and naked hang-gliding over our crowded beaches... none of which will ever get feet put to them. :) To defend the point just alittle though, i play in a home game with our local county sherrif, prosecutor, and circuit court judge, so im willing to bet (no pun intended) that the feasibility of some little venture would be greater than normal. As for washing the profits.. hehe.. we'll save that for another post.

I sure hope they have internet access in prison.. Id sure miss the fourm...
