| Well it finanally had to happen. I'm going to sit down in a chair, at a real Brick & Mortar casino. (Actually it ain't brick and mortar as it is a boat.) I'm gonna touch real cards and play with people whose face I can see... and who can see my face. It's been some time. Played a total of 3 times in a casino. Last time was February. Since then I have put in many hours on UB. Read a few books. And spent way too much time reading posts here. :) I'm a bit nervous. I hope I can tread water. TK P.S. Quads three times last night. Twice in a SnG that I won and once at the 25¢ table for a big eight bucks. I hope I didn't use up all my good karma last night. | ||

| Hey TK, Don't be nervous; be confident. Take all your knowledge with you and show them a thing or two about the game! Remember, they're probably going to be a little nervous themselves and are probably just there to have fun. You can have fun with them as well, just remember what your goal is,,,money. Have a good time. I hope you have a profitable day. Just play your best so the next time you do go to a casino or boat, you'll have even more confidence. 4 POKER | ||

| TK- You will do fine. An easy way to get over your nerves is to play somewhat tighter early on until you get in the groove. Then, once you are comfortable and have a good feel for the game and the players, loosen the purse strings a little as appropriate. As 4P said, be confident. With all that you have learned and studied, you will most likely be one of the best if not the best player in the game. Good luck, Steve | ||

| Thanks guys. I should be okay once things start seeming familiar. And as long as I can think about the chips as just bets since I'll be going from playing 25-50¢ to $5-$10. (I wish they spread a smaller limit.) Would it make me look like a fish if I put a 3" x 5" card in front of me and write in bold black marker: "DON'T CHASE!". Sometimes I need to be reminded of that when my AKo or Axs doesn't hit. TKarrde "Forgive me your highness, I did not see you!" "Your aim would suggest otherwise." | ||

| Better idea, have "DONT CHASE!" silkscreened on a T-shirt. If you wear that, it may have a psychological effect on the other players. | ||

| Just got my Ultimate Bet hat in the mail the other day. My reward for winning 8000UB points in a tourney. Question is, as you guys occassionaly talk about table image, would it be okay to wear the hat to the poker table? Would it help, hurt, or be indifferent? Also, I plan on taking a few of my favorite chips from my poker chip collection sealed nicely away in an Air-Tite to "protect" my cards. Will that look cheesey? | Wearing the hat would say this, "I am an internet player." What that means it that the fish won't change their play against you because they don't even look at such things. The solid 5-10 players will have you pegged as a "dedicated newbie" or something of that colour and will more or less leave you alone. I'd say that somebody wearing a UB hat that nobody has ever seen before in my casino would be a good player at the 5-10, would probably be a target at the 10-20, and if you sat at the 20-40, they would instantly target you and start eating you alive. So yeah, wear the hat to the 5-10. | ||

| Last time I was in Las Vegas I bought a very nice tan colored bowling style collared shirt at Binion's Horseshoe. It has "Binion's Horseshoe" with the Horseshoe logo stitched in black over the left breast area (not that I have man boobs or anything). I've noticed when I wear this shirt at the local B&M it always draws a comment or two. I also believe it has other players more likely to think "possible pro" rather than "probable fish" - and if the shirt doesn't convince them then a set of 8s check raised on the turn might send the message louder. | ||

| The most important thing that you can do is detach the value of the money you are playing from the chips. I would suggest that you buy in and concertedly think of the chips in front of you as 25c chips instead of $5 chips. If you are good at lying to yourself it'll help you through hard times and good times. | ||

| I sat in a real live B&M game a few weeks ago after playing online for a couple of months. I thought I would be nervous, but to my surprise, I wasn't. Seemed natural. Played for about 3 hours and ended up losing $50 but was happy with my experience. You'll do fine.... | ||

| Here it goes.... (damn I think I wrote a novel) Ended up going to the other "local" casino. It is about 30 minutes farther away but is much nicer and spreads a $2-$4 game. I like that. Makes the money last longer but I know that they average 5 players to the flop. I wore the hat and took one of my prettier chips in an Air-Tite to protect my cards. I don't think a single person at my table recognized the hat as anything related to poker which surprised me (but it was an older crowd). I mentioned to a couple older (50+) gentlemen that I had been talking to for about an hour that I played some online. They asked me what site I played on while practically looking straight at my hat. I felt silly protecting my chips because NO ONE else used anything to protect their chips. But after having AA scooped by a dealer I ain't going without. The night actually started off VERY BAD. It took well over 3 hours to get a seat at my table. I was getting livid. When I signed up there were only 6 people in front of me. I kept thinking it would be "any moment" and that drove me insane. I actually broke down and played some BJ to pass the time. I had brought $200 thinking I would be playing $5-$10 but figured I only needed $100 for $2-$4 so decided to gamble the other Benjamin. Only played two shoes thinking that it would be "any moment". I won $35 and decided to walk away with it before the BJ table had its normal way with me. At one point I checked the list and there was only one person in front of me. Watching the tables and waiting I saw that they called two other people for the $2-$4. I even had a pager! :( I went back over to the desk which was busy. When they called 2 more for the table about 15 minutes later I quickly jumped in, explained, and got a seat. But I was not happy. But I didn't take it out of the Poker room employees as they always seem to be under enough stress as it is. Well I get seated. It was odd that I didn't have to post before I played. They just started dealing to me immediately. I waited for the really good hands. That didn't happen anytime soon and I ended up just playing my blinds for the first 3 or 4 rounds. Finally with T7o in a blind the flop came TAT. I checked. As I figured there was a bet. I called. Turn came a blank. I checked. Same bet happened but this time I raised it. He called. River was a blank. I bet. He called. And I took it down. He was one of the older gentlemen right next to me. Rather than say nice cards... he gave what seemed like a nice compliment as told me I played it well. Unfortunately I gotta say the rest of the evening was rather boring. I got two big pots the rest of the night that I did not deserve. I had ATo. Limped in. Flop came KJx. Checked around to me I raised t try and represent a big pair. Everyone called. Turn was a blank. Again checked to me. Tried again to represent, bet, and was called by all. River came a Q. Everyone checked, I bet, they all called. The other big pot was having 84o in the small blind. Thought I could see it cheap. Big blind raised. I said an explicitive in my head but decided to call. Flop came 84A. Took down another big pot. All in all I played 3 hours. Made $20 dollars or 5BB. I enjoyed myself. But not as much as my buddy playing craps that took down $1200. But I took $100 off him for transfering some of my UB winning to his account. (He is the gambler type... his UB money was gone FAST!) Thanks for the support, everyone. Great group here. TKarrde "On my honor as a Gypsy... anything you can carry!" | ||

| TK, I can't tell you how many times I have walked in to my local cardroom only to find that either the lists are unbelievably long or the game that does have an open seat in it is either a bad game or the limit is not suited for me. I give myself several options and that's it. I either wait patiently for a seat or a new game to open, I'll bring a book with me just in case there is a wait, or I go home and call it a day. Sorry TK, but if you're there to play poker and want so desirely to make money than BJ should be out of the question entirely. And after having those feelings of frustration and being livid, I'm surprised that you even chose to play poker at all. Anyway, enough with the lecture, thanks for sharing your night experience, just remember... Patience is a virtue. 4 POKER | ||

| Thanks for the open comments. Poker to me hasn't become about making money yet. I am not at that level and I doubt I will be anytime soon. I just wanna have fun. And the challenge for me is to beat the game (which I guess you keep track of by the money.) But I had a friend go with me who drove so I was pretty much stuck. Next time I'm bringing a book and headphones (they do allow it). And I may even put myself down for the 5-10 table or the 1-5 Stud so I can have some options. Did I mention that the same 10 people sat at that table for almost 2 hours before I sat down. Which got me thinking (especially with some older people on the table) that they were all probably pretty tight-passive. But that was just a shot in the dark. TKarrde "You fool! | TK, okay, if you're just playing for recreational purposes and really are just playing the game for fun right now, than I won't get on your case too much about the Blackjack. It's just that I'd hate for you or anyone else(especially the younger guys) to lose their money in a game that really just favors the house and not the player himself...that's all. (but you can have fun at poker too and you'll have a greater chance at making money as long as you take it seriously, and that means no BJ; at least not in the same night before a poker session). All the facets of poker; the strategies, the bluffs, the real good plays that you make are very rewarding and heck, beatin' the pants off everyone doesn't hurt either; in fact, it's a shitload of fun!! Much more fun and challenging than a game of blackjack...but that is just my opinion. But if you had a good time and it didn't cost you too much, than I'm glad. Have a good weekend,TK 4P- | ||

| Agreed! That is why I took up Poker. All my friends liked to go to the boat. But I knew that no matter what I played I was on the losing end. So I decided to learn and study poker so that I could go with, enjoy myself, AND have an edge! TKarrde | ||

| You will be aok. Keep in mind that generally speaking, you will have more time between hands in a B&M, so you can calculate those odds, study the good players, and generally stretch your observation powers. Smile and don't be afraid of projecting a tough, confident image. If you decide to NOT wear the UB hat to the casino, there is nothing wrong with players "thinking" you are a salmon, ... The idea being to play well, rake in the pots you deserve, until they "figure out" you can play. Relax, concentrate, and put the bets in when you think you have the better hand. Let us all know how you are doing! flintsword | ||
