A quetion for the pros out there., mongi, 12. Jun 2003 21:14 | ||

| I have been playing poker for about 3 years, however in the last year I have begun the take it very serious in fact I would like to become a pro someday. I have read many books, articles, forums etc. and have greatly improved over the last year. After each session I analyze my play and try to figure out what I could have done better and how much money I lost because of a particular mistake. Ironically, it seems as though this dollar amount has increased instead of decreased over the past year. I hadn't been able to understand why this was happening until it dawned on me that I have a better understanding of what is a mistake compare to what I knew in the past. So as I learn more and more I realize how bad of a player I was and how much better I am now. I still make way too many mistakes to quit my day job, at least for now. I am curious how it was for you guys in the beginning of your careers. did you experience a similar learnig curve. Do you still make many mistakes now?, do you often have perfect sessions or are there usually some mistakes involved? Do you continue to read and study? thanks for your reply. Mongi | ||

| It took me ten years of serious playing part time while I held a desk job, before I knew I was ready. My advice is if you have any lingering doubt, don't. Furthermore, if Ronald Reagan didn't sign the legislation to allow the Indian's to negotiate with State government in good faith - I would never have done it. With just Atlantic City and Las Vegas as choices for venue, there would have been too much of a concentration of better players than I am. | ||

| Getting better means realizing that yesterday's brilliant plays are today's idiotic mistakes. I could tell you many a tale of "brilliant moves" I've made in the past that resulted in me telling a Brilliant Move Story(TM) only to have a better player tell me what a lucky dork I was. Now I hear these stories from others and shake my head. I'm sure that some of the Brillian Move Stories(TM) I tell now will seem just as boneheaded to me in a few years - at least I hope so. Remember when somebody first told you not to play A8o in late position. You probably though, "But I can play it well." Then it dawned on you that you could throw away this garbage and you realized how much it had been costing you. For me, these were landmark hands to stop playing most of the time: First, Axo Then, KJo in early position Then, QTo in middle position I'm sure that there are a few hands I still play too much. For instance I'm rather partial to largish suited one gappers. Something like J9s or T8s - hands that I really shouldn't think about touching in early position. I make the excuse that I'm at loose enough passive enough tables to get away with this, but they are probably the next thing to get knocked out of my repertoir. | ||

| Keep the T7 though. Seriously, I would think you have milked that one enough. Don't the aware players in your game know you have an affinity for these cards by now? Time for 52s, a real crackerjack! | ||

| I'll raise 7To from time to time, that's true. But certainly not every time I get it. Almost all the time I'll throw that sweet baby in the much. Why do I like to use 7To as my "Sklansky hand"? - because it still looks like a smelly piece of cheese in terms of advertizing, but it has a much better chance of actually winning than something like 25o. | ||

| That was 52s, a little better. The reason I prefer this as a randomization hand, is because I'm not likely to be outkicked with a pair those times I might continue to play against a read for just two big cards. Two pairs and trips aren't going to make someone else a hand that can catch up as often. The straight draw with a 43 flop may get extra bets from someone with an ace if the wheel hits. And no, I don't play this every time either. It's pick a color in advance to play it half the time. Just messing with your T7 choice, not to be taken seriously. | ||

| Heheh...fair enough. Actually, the 7T thing is something that I won't play if it hits just a 7 or T anyway. It's something that needs to flop 2 pair or up/down at least. In all fairness, I think that 7To is falling by the wayside for me. My new favourite garbage hand has become Qh2h - we'll see if this shapes up to be my bollogne hand in the long run. | ||

| Hey Mongi, I've been playing professionally for quite some time now(around ten years or so), and to answer some of your questions...... There's always going to be room for improvement in anyones game so by keeping yourself up to date with some of the newer material while still possessing your knowledge and strong poker skills that got you there in the first place, is very important. So yes...I still read books, and sometimes I even pick up a book that I had read ten years ago, just to see how far I advanced or if I still believe that what a particular writer would necessarily "ring true" in today's poker world. You also asked if pros' still make mistakes or if they have perfect sessions. Well the difference in being a pro vs. a recreational type player is this.... Depending on how much experience a pro has, and exactly how skillful he actually is(because your skill levels do vary; even in the pro vs. pro comparison)... his mistakes will be fewer than most players, and when and if he does make a mistake, he will tend to notice it quicker so he'll be able to change/fix that problem much faster. And yes... there are many times when I do feel that I have played a perfect session of poker...winning the session or not! I know when my game is flawless and when it is not! The key to that is realizing it right away in case you do have to make some adjustments in your play. Remember...The pro poker player is playing for his rent money, his food bills,etc.,this is his livelyhood so he is definitely going to take the game more serious than your average player would...He HAS to. The more experience you have, and the more skilled a person is(no matter what form of occupation you're referring to), the better that person will be at that job. And that means making fewer mistakes and capitalizing on their abilities as a trained/skilled professional. ($$$). Another thing that has kept me in line and well informed of the game is...I tend to associate more with peoples' opinions that I really respect and admire. Don't mean to sound snobbish or anything even close to that, but when I hang around really good poker players and we can all share in the "what to do's" and the what not to do's in the game; and have real good discussions over analyzing hands and such, just helps me as a pro player to become an even better player. I have this friend who plays poker who really isn't that serious about the game(says he is but...), anyway, he's a good friend of mine and sometimes it's hard for me to understand as to WHY he just wants to play his own way and is not willing to change his game for the better. And sometimes it dawns on me that this particular friend of mine is NOT a pro player(has a regular job), and really just wants to have fun. Oh well, I guess I can't change that...I just wish that I could. I want all my friends to profit from poker, especially when they do devote so much of their time and hard earned money at it. These were just a few of my thoughts on poker......... 4 POKER | ||
