| Okay gang... Here's one people may have thought of, but not really put much thought into... Suppose one person gets multiple accounts at an online poker room... Say PokerStars for instance? And has two or three active accounts and sits down at the same table and knows 30% of the hands? Or sits in a tournament for that matter. Now, the odds that they'll wind up on the same table are beyond me... But what if it happened? How unfair/unethical would that be? Don't think it happens? Well, here's a copy of the e-mail I sent PokerStars a few minutes ago. You can check the freeroll tournament yourself. "To Whom It May Concern: I'm sure that people log in with two or three accounts all the time and play in a game and know 30% of the cards. I'm sure it's hard to track because they don't use the same name, but if you look at the Freeroll Tournament # 136186 on June 12th you'll see Bctaz1 from Kamloops and Bctaz13 from Kamloops... How obvious is that? I know it's a freeroll, but those nine seats can get into your weekly tournament and win real cash. I don't know if Bctaz1 and Bctaz13 are the same person, but if they are then I don't think that it's fair to have 2 entries in 1 tournament, freeroll or not. I hope this doesn't happen in your cash tournaments, because I am making a deposit to PokerStars this week once my Neteller account is credited. However, I wouldn't want to play in a tournament where one person might have multiple accounts and know what cards are in play and what cards are not in play. Imagine if their various accounts wind up on the same table? Please let me know how you prevent this from happening, whether it's identifying IP addresses or whatever." | ||

| But wait, there's more from Kamloops... I started checking all the names? Here's another copy of my e-mail to PokerStars... "Hmmm... There's also a bljeans and a bljeans13 both from Kamloops... What are the odds that bctaz1, bctaz13, bljeans, and bljeans13 from Kamloops are one and the same person? Pretty good I'd bet. That's not fair, freeroll or not. Tournament 136186. Please look into this matter and let me know how you prevent this from happening in cash games/tournaments." | ||

| Okay, here were both replies from Poker Stars. I feel better now. Hello DJ, We have a state of the art duplicate tracking system that prevents players from the same household from playing in the same cash game or sit and go tournament. We are also very aggressive in locating duplicate accounts and closing them. Each player is permitted only one account, and our database is very good at locating and closing multiples. For cash games we have collusion tracking software that tracks play between players and notes aberrations in play that we use to catch the rare real money colluders. You are correct that these 4 accounts (and actually two others in the event as well) are likely the same person. Our software had already noted them earlier today and we were awaiting an explanation from the players via Email. I am watching the players, and if it becomes apparent to me that this is one person hopping from account to account as the others bust out, then I will disqualify the others and close the accounts. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We appreciate players who take the integrity of even the play money games with the same seriousness we do. Good luck, and thank you for playing on PokerStars. | ||

| One thing I'd like to add from my previous message is that the software does prevent players from the same IP address playing at the same table. While it appears possible that this player has six entries into the event, he's not doing as you suggest here -- seeing 30% of the cards. None of his potential six entries are at the same table, and five of them are "sitting out". He can only play one of them at a time, so I suspect his motive is to have "standby accounts" in this freeroll, permitting him to play his first stack very aggressively, and if he busts, to move on to the next account. (This is what I am watching for now). In essence, this winds up making this a rebuy tournament for him, and a freezeout for everyone else. This would be an extremely poor strategy to employ outside of a freeroll event, and you'd be quite unlikely to run up against it in an event where the player had to pony up money for each of the six seats. I'm watching him (don't tip him off, please!) and if he is doing this, he's caught red-handed. | ||
