This may sound like a strange post but i play a lot online and often people comment on " how stoned " they are etc..

It seems to me that there are a lot of people out there who smoke and play i for one will admit to smoking pot ( not as much as i used to in my university days) and am interested to know if the type of person who smokes it is also the same type of personality who enjoys poker.

Also if people smoke and play on line does it effect there game ? Up until last xmas i used to smoke and play and looking back at it now i was obviously missing a lot of information about the game i was in for obvious reasons.

I guess the one useful point we can try to work out from this is if someone is stoned and playing should we change our game knowing this ? ie advertising plays go down in value ( as if you are wasted you will forget previous hands anyway )

This post is half in jest, about a quater out of interest and lets say the remaining quater in improving my game.

Just curious to know peoples thoughts.

No use bringing up every drug and discussing its effects on play.

Just read all the posts concerning any opponent that isn't taking the game seriously, or is playing with an obvious hinderance.

Then realize that you don't really know if they are telling the truth.

I know a number of players who smoke up...in fact most of the good players I know enjoy a little weed from time to time, though we're up here in Canada, so it isn't illegal and it doesn't really count as "drugs" in that possesion gets you a ticket (equivalent to a speeding ticket) unless you have more than an ounce in posession. As for playing under the influence, I don't know anybody who plays real serious poker after smoking up. $1-$2 with the mates, sure, but not real poker.

Anything that alters your thought process and causes you to lose focus and awareness can not be a positive thing in a poker game or anywhere else.

I agree with 4 poker.......If it alters your mind it affects your thought process...I have never seen a player that was strongly into drugs or alcohol survive the test of time at poker.

Thought procceses can actually be altered for the positive for certain people with certain meds. Actually, I am ADHD and think that a med I was on while overcoming the effects of the disease could help me a lot in poker because of it's ability to help me focus. Caffine actually provides ADHD sufferers with much the same effect. However since I play mostly at night I don't drink much coffee as it keeps me up too late after I'm done playing.

Just my opinion on

Strangely enough, some random player said much the same thing during a tournament game, "I'm stoned" during a tournament game. He didn't last long, went all in for an inside str8 against a strong UTG raiser and the button reraise ... They had something.

During some tournaments, if I am having dinner I will have a glass of wine, but if I am playing for keeps ... coffee or water is the norm.

Maybe the pros with more experience can comment on poker players being susceptible or attracted to drugs. Maybe Roy can comment, from what he saw as a rounder in his early days of playing poker.

In A. Alvarez' book "The Biggest Game in Town" he talked about one top professional from England (I think) who was a huge drinker at the tables and won all the time. He mentioned this was extremely rare.

I for one would love to know I was at a table (especially online) with players who were stoned.

I have enough problems concentrating when tired late at night (and my win rate during the day and in the mornings are a bit higher). Can't imagine playing effectively while boozing or otherwise.
