| Does anyone know from a mathematical point of view whether A-x has positive EV in the small blind? I find myself folding A-x a lot (from every position) and am wondering if I'm costing myself money. Let's say that I'm playing 3/6 with a small blind bet of $1. $2 would show me the flop. | ||

| I don't have any scientific data or computer simulation to back this up but I believe that Ax from the SB is an overall weak play. The problem comes that if you call with it from the SB in an unraised pot suppose you get an A on the flop. The appropriate play would be to bet out, but if someone limped in with a hand like A10 or AJ then they'll have you beat with limited outs to improve your hand. If you bet they may either just smooth call or even raise, and if you check they'll surely pick up the betting where you left off. The other scenario is that no one else has an ace and everyone folds, winning you a small pot. The best you could hope for is that you hit a 2 pair or trips with your x card on the flop and that someone else has the other trips card with a weaker kicker. One of the biggest problems with playing Ax on the SB is that you're in bad position for later betting rounds. About the worst thing you could do is get into a check/call situation with someone in middle or late position who has an Ace+Kicker. Remember, they chose to commit the full amount to the pot, so most of the time odds are their ace will be stronger than yours. | ||

| I don't play AX out of the small blind unless the big blind doesn't chop. | ||

| i find this an interesting question cause i am trying to see where i make my mistakes why i am not a big winning player. With 4 or more players already in i don't even think about folding and i can't wait to put my half bet in (unraised pot else i am out) i love this forum. tommyhawk | ||

| If no one has called preflop i often raise out of the sb with Ax, i would even raise with it if only the button/cutoff has called ( not raised ),but i dont play many hands at LLHE and so use this play to show i can play a hand or two of garbage. If i do raise pre flop with Ax i ALWAYS bet the flop ( unless massively co-ordinated) of course i only really play 1-2 and 2-4 so it could just be that it works for me at this limit. I am very interested to know what other people do in this situation though. Chasepoker | ||

| It depends a lot on how you play it. I will come in with Axo in the SB or on the puck if conditions are right. The thing is that if I only hit one ace, I'll play it agressively, but if I get strong re-agression I'm willing to throw it away. Basically, I'll bet out on the flop and if I'm raised I'll usually call (assuming I have pot odds to draw another card). If the turn doesn't improve me, then I'll muck to a turn bet. It also does wonders for your table image when you come in on the small with Axo bet your ace, get raised and call, hit your x on the turn, checkraise and get called down by A9 or some garbage. If I'm against very solid opponents though, I'll never play this junk because there's not enough implied odds in it if you have the best hand with it. Something to play at the 10-20, but not the 20-40, basically. | ||
