Whoops...wrong post!

You'll have to ask Stdioh, Shorn, Flintsword, Wren and any of the other mathematical geeks! (just kidding guys/gals).

Lets say you are playing Stud w/ a full table (8 players). You start off w/ 3 clubs (there are only 13 in the deck), so you need 2/10 to make your fluh. As more clubs come out your odds get worse. Of course, you can NEVER know the actual odds b/c of hole cards & burn cards. But you can keep count & know how many cards are left in the deck and how many cards will improve your hand which haven't been shown by another player.

Hmmmmm ... OK, here is one ....

The Odds are about even money that you will eventually loose with rolled up A-A to some knucklehead with 7-2o, and it will cost you another 5 bucks to "stdioh" to tell the story. (*ha,ha,ha*)

OK, Maybe "4Poker" was right, you better let the math majors answer this one.

if you hold 2 suited cards in texas hold em, and their are two of the same suit on the board at the turn, there are 9 cards left that will give you flush out of 46 cards you have not seen. So roughly, you will hit your flush 1 time out of 5 tries. Therefore if the pot is $30 or more, it is profitable to call for $5 because $5 is less than 1/5th of the pot. You must also figure your implied odds which is how much money you can make on future betting rounds if you make your hand.

Hey Poker Dude,

If you go into some of my posts as responses in the past, I do the math for calculating odds of making a hand. When you've figured out the chance of making a hand you need to multiply that by the chance the hand will win. Then take the total amount in the pot and see if it is covered. If you're sure that you can squeeze X more bets out of people then you can consider that too.

Hi tron,
I see that 4 POKER has tossed me into the math geek/poker player category, a category I am pleased to belong to. Math and poker: "All poker is not math, granted". That said a "falling out" with luck is normal and temporary. A "falling out" with math is permanent and consistent losses, so you are smart to pursue the math side of poker. It is a lot vaster and interesting than you would think.

For example, you have a player that raises 25% of ALL the hands he is dealt. Math will allow you to make some pretty shrewd guesses on what his average card values have to be, and that allows you to hit back at him with a Kx (x<9) instead of a serious hand.

The above example comes from a SUPER series of articles called (surprise, surprise) "A Bit of Maths" written by Paul Samuel out of England. The link for the FIRST article in the series is below:

http://www.pokerpages.com/articles/archives/samuel01.htm

and the good news is (1) There are nineteen articles after that one, just click on the "next article" link at the bottom, and (2) It looks like he will be writing more great articles. One of my favourite (Don't wince Stdioh & 4 POKER ...) is the one on playing 4 6 ... lol which is:

http://www.pokerpages.com/articles/archives/samuel12.htm

Paul Samuel has become quite the up-and-coming poker player in Europe, but his math outlook on poker makes IMO his columns a must read. By the way, all his articles have the heading: "(The UK's answer to Mike Caro or Lassie)" so we know that he also has a sense of humour. Congrats on asking questions tron. He who asks, ... gets. I hope this answer helps you out.

Flintsword,
I didn't just toss you into the math geek category...you earned it!
{So yes, you should be honored that you made the list) he,he,he!

Have you had a chance to "really" go through all the Paul Samuel articles? I am curious to get your views on this (IMO super) columnist. By the way, ... thank you.
