Good play or unethical Part 2, Big_Slick, 9. Jun 2003 20:16

How about this move? You are first to act on the river and aren't really sure if you have a strong enough hand to win or if you could even steal the pot with a bluff. You reach for your chips as if you are going to bet and sneak a look out of the corner of your eye. Sure enough, your opponent is reaching for his chips too. You put your chips back and fold.

I got cursed at once for doing this by a very disturbed old man. I never took my chips and placed them in front of me to bet... I simply picked up a stack and held them in my hand. I didn't see anything wrong my play. Maybe if he wasn't creaming in his pants to bet, he would have gotten me for one more. I had top 2 pair and he had trip 4's - which he was more than happy to show everyone at the table.

That play is not unethical, its acting. Players do all sorts of acting at the table. Unless you verbally announce a bet or place you chips on the felt, you can do just about what ever you like.

He was just pissed off he fell for it.

There was nothing unethical about what you did. You simply used the information he gave you to your advantage saved yourself a waisted bet.

For all he knew you just picked them up to shuffle them in your hand (as many players including myself do.) He had no right to flip out and you did nothing illegal.

This is fine. And, its a good lesson to all of us when we have the best hand on the river...don't make any moves until your opponent's action is complete. It may cost you a few hours income.

This move is legal in many areas. In some areas if you move your chips forward or break your stack it constitutes a bet. I think inducing tells is part of the game.

There's nothing wrong with that. I will often do things like hold a complete bet in my hand or stack several complete bets on top of my cards while the action is happening elsewhere on the table if I want people to think I am strong and consider checking to me... this is essentially the same thing.

As long as there is no forward motion or declaration of a bet/raise, you have done nothing wrong.

I don't think this is too unethical - here you are really just "changing your mind before you make a bet" ... but you should mind the rules of the cardroom. Some rooms consider picking up chips from your stack and action to bet and will make that alone binding.

What I prefer to do in a situation like this is just check and then if the old guy in late position bets, consider making a bluff checkraise. Of coruse if he's telling that he's on a monster when he bets it, I'll fold, but if he bets like he's on something marginal and is afraid of giving a free card or like he's on a bluff himseld, I'll bluff checkraise. What I normally find is that the bettor will make an auto-call here and then fold if he doesn't improve on the turn. It is a bit wretched when you get called on the turn and find yourself bettng the river and praying that running this bluff hasn't cost you 3 big bets. Still, that's the price you have to be willing to pay if you have enough confidence in your read. What fries me is when some noodle calls me down with 22 after I've done the above, either because he figured me for overcards correctly or because he just doesn't know any better.

It's not your fault. Plays like that happen all the time at the Bellagio & Mirage. He missed a bet, i.e. made a mistake. All he had to do was bet.
