Every so often when I've walked into a poker room there is a player at a table with a monster stack of chips.. When I've sat down at a table where a player has a huge stack it seems like the other players make him the center of attention, either attacking him too agressively or giving him too much respect. I used to know a player at the Mirage who would always sit down at a 20-40 table with 5 racks of red chips. I used to wonder if that tactic did him any good.

Any thoughts?

My thoughts are this:

If you're a solid player then your chip position should not matter that much.
Some players feel that with the more chips they bring to the table, the more it will seem that they are beating the game and that they are a winning player.

There's nothing wrong with taking that approach.

If you're a solid player, then having a monster stack is fine, and it shouldn't matter if your opponents are willing to chase you down with garbage-you'll be getting the chips regardless(at least in the long run anyway and that is what matters most). If you're a bad/loose player then maybe your chip position won't matter at all because eventually they'll all be gone anyway.

I think your table image is very important and I would much rather have more chips in front of me then less chips compared to everyone else.
I probably wouldn't by in for an obsene amount, but I would make sure that I had an adequate amount or slightly more than that before I sat down.

You wouldn't believe that most of the regular pros' in Las Vegas do buy in for more than the average amount and as soon as they run low, they are right back to the cashier's cage buying more!

When I see a guy sit at the 10-20 and buy in 3 racks I start pounding on him immediately. More often than not, this is a guy who buys in for 3 racks because that is the ammount that he is *planning* to lose.

LOL

I always wondered about that guy at the Mirage. I think I only played against him once or twice, and that was before he started buying in for 5 racks. As I recall, I didn't think he has that good when I played him. Funny thing is, I noticed him walking away from the cashiers cage with his 5 racks to a table every day, but I never noticed him walking back to the cage with them. LOL

OTH, if you did this and got a lot of people to play overly aggressive at you, it might be something you could take advantage of. I guess, if I get to playing again, I will just have to try this at least once or twice. :)

That may be true in your neck of the woods but trust me, the real pros in Vegas do buy in for a ton of chips and most of the time they are leaving with them and many more, too!

I guess the bottom line is, if you're a solid player, you'll be getting the chips regardless and if you're a bad player then your chip position will only look impressive for a short period of time!
