| I flopped top pair in a small no-limit THE tourney, and the player on my right went all-in on a flush draw. I called, but he hit his flush on the turn. My question is: Did he just get lucky? Should I have called? | ||

| There's a lot more information needed to know if you should call or not How many people were left? What were the blinds? What were the stack sizes? How many places got paid? What type of players were left? What kind of player was the one that went all-in? But in general, I don't think I would call an all-in bet with top pair. I don't usually consider calling an all-in bet unless I have a very strong hand. The player may have made a mistake by betting all-in with a flush draw (again depends on many factors), but you don't want to put yourself in a situation where you have a decent chance to bust out of the tournament. | ||

| Thanks for the feedback. To answer your questions: * How many people were left? Him and me on the hand; about 15 in the tourney. * What were the blinds? 50/100 * What were the stack sizes? Almost exactly the same. * How many places got paid? Sattelite; trying to earn a seat in a bigger game. * What type of players were left? At my table, two tight and one loose. * What kind of player was the one that went all-in? loose. Sorry for the lack of detail; I still need to learn what's important to mention. There was no straight draw except turn and river runners; my thoughts were, he had a flush draw or two pair. My kicker was higher than the top pair, so after the flop, I had 5 outs, or a 1-in-5 chance (appx) of improving. So my bet was that my existing was better than his existing, which turned out to be true, and then he outdrew me. You'll always get outdrawn now and then .. that happens and I can take it. I don't want to mis-play, though, and it sounds like I might have. Thoughts? | ||

| The odds were still almost 2 to 1 against for him to make his flush. So he actually made the wrong play and you the right one. But the question you have to ask yourself is can you live with getting knocked out of a tournament on a hand where you just got top pair after the flop? Though you probably did have the best hand at that point. | ||

Though you probably did have the best hand at that point. Thanks for your post. The answer is, yes, I can live with getting knocked out with only top pair. As I understand it, the object is to win pots, not get lucky. Bluffing and out-playing aside, you only need the best hand to win, not a great hand. Looking back, I *know* I guessed right on the player's hand, and I *think* I played it right. If I get outdrawn, so be it .. that's poker. But did I mis-play? | ||

| Depends on your stack size, his stack size, your perception of him, your perception of his perception of you and the rest of the table. Lots of things. In general, you should not call here. And it doesn't matter what he had or whether he got there or not. Results mean nothing. | ||
