| OK...online playing 15-30 at Paradise. Up about $2000 for the night...lose CONSECUTIVE hands with AA, KK, and (this is the one that sent me steaming) A9s OTB that turned a str8 flush (2345 on board). Guy called my 3 bet on the flop cold with just the 6 of diamonds. OK, so it wasn't the worst beat ever, but a one-outer none-the-less. Oh, by the way, it was 2:30 in the morning. So, I decide that "Well, I obviously can't win with good cards anymore so, F*** it, it is time to switch gears and play trash." About 45 minutes later, I log off after dropping $3300 from the up $2000 point. Needless to say, I felt sick to my stomach for about a month after that... | ||

| Still painful to think about, but thanks. This was early on in my online career. It was that night that I decided to never again play higher than 5-10 online and, more importantly, to NEVER play late on Friday night after working a 60 hour week. I just couldn't compete at that level being so tired and the games were too tough for me. Anyway, if you don't learn anything from your bad mistakes/sessions then why bother trying to improve... | ||

| I agree 100%. I just thought that you should be commended for your honesty to all of us. I also do not play for high stakes on-line. I did in the beginning and then I realized that you can lose a ton of money in one session just by playing in a $20-40 or a $15-30 game of hold-em...no thanks. Those games play like a three-ring circus and luckily for me I found that out early and had no problem stepping down to the $5-10 and $3-6 levels. I work too hard when I play in the casino and have never been more than a grind it out type, so why would I now want to risk my entire weekly earn by playing in a crazy $20-40 game on-line? I'm sure you felt the same way; a 60 hour work week is a tough thing but I'm sure you work very hard at what you do so why risk that in one or two sessions of poker- it's not worth it. Grant it, poker can be very rewarding($), but who needs any added pressures, it's suppost to be enjoyable as well-especially the on-line stuff! 4 POKER | ||

| Thanks. That was the conclusion I came to as well about higher limit on-line. Just too many sharks and not enough fish to make it worthwhile. I found out very quickly just how lacking my game was and man was that an expensive lesson. Who knows, maybe someday I will give it a whirl again, but I think the 3-6 and 5-10 games are good enough not to bother. I will say that it is good to hear from someone as good as you are that you had a similar experience (although less expensive!!). Steve | ||

| After reading this post, I can honestly look back and laugh. I used to actually curse at the computer screen and go balistic! That is so out of character for me and I just couldn't handle it anymore...I was litterally losing my mind!(I never even typed anything in either...maybe I should have, who knows). Anyway, I am so much more relaxed now playing at the low limits and I'll tell ya Steve, my wins are pretty decent, too. Dave | ||

| Interesting time to discuss this (see my post re: Therapy Please). I am on a serious 4 session losing streak. For the most part, I have maintained my composure (despite the urge to reach through the computer and kill a few lucky ass fishies). But here is a hand that I couldn't control myself on (call it a one hand tilt): Keep in mind I am a fairly aggressive player and I live with the swings that go with that (although I only generally play premium hands). I am the Dealer this hand. UTG raises (a guy that was quite loose, very hot and partially responsible for my tilt). 1 limper (from a pretty good but fairly aggressive player), I call with pocket 10d, 10h, everyone else folds. Flop comes down 9d, As, Jd. UTG bets out. He really could have anything (had been raising preflop with marginal hands) but being UTG I should have put him on AA or AK. The limper folds. Naturally I should fold as this screamed of having at least a pair of aces. So of course (being on a tilt) I reraise. He reraises and I call. On the turn, I pick up 10c. I made my set!! I decided to put him on AK and decide that I had him beat (of course, I was tilting). So when he bets out, I re-raise. He re-raises and I call. The river brings Kh. Excellent I thought, since he has AK, he now has two pair and is about to get slaughtered (heh heh). The K also created the possibility of a straight (in case he had QQ and was overplaying his hand, which I thought was highly unlikely). Of course, he turned over AA and took down a monster pot containing mostly my money. Normally, had I not been on a tilt, I would have called his bet on the flop, called his bet on the turn (after hitting my set) and checked back to him on the river. I would certainly have tossed my hand in any instance had I not hit my set (great time to make a set, huh?). But the reraise on the flop was clearly the work of a tilt. I actually won the other hand that I tilted with - reraising a blind stealer with nothing on the flop and hitting my hand. Won a pretty nice pot too. That doesn't qualify though (tilt stories should have unhappy endings). | ||

| Tilt is a real headache ... I was keeping good records for about a month (so it was a "burn rate", not an "earn rate" yet ...) and had worked hard to move from a loss of a few bucks per hour playing to a couple of cents. A few steaming cracked pairs, a str8 flush loss to a higher str8 flush and a half hour of tilt before I came to my senses and shut the computer off. When I entered the data into my excel spreadsheet, I realized that an hour of tilt can wipe out a month of profits in a very real way. A few days off, some serious modifications to my play, and a more determined and cold blooded approach to play eventually more than covered that loss. Tilt is bad for the bankroll but a great galvanizer of the fighting spirit to improve, so it is not all bad news. Sometimes a serious loss is a godsend if it brings to light something in your game that needs to be addressed. flintsword | ||
