When to call it quits for the day, Big_Slick, 4. Jun 2003 17:14 | ||

| For the pros and semi-pros... when do you know that it's time to call it day? Do you set a predetermined time? Do you have a win/loss mark established? Do you leave after an especially large pot or very bad beat? Obviously if you're a winning player and everything is going well, you'll want to play all day long but I know that -- as in everything -- moderation is often best. Any thoughts would be appreciated. | ||

| I have a series of rules that I follow, depending on the day, other obligations I might have, etc. First, often I must have a time limit. For example, I play every Tuesday when my ex comes to visit the kids. I must be home by 9 pm, so I get up from the table at 8:15. If it were, say a Friday night when I had no such obligation, I might choose a cutoff of six hours, or eight hours, depending on how I feel. I also have been playing different limits lately. I will usually start with 3/6. If I double my stack, I will move up to 4/8, if I double again, 6/12... I also only take to the casino with me as much of my bankroll that I am willing to lose that night (usually 3 times my normal buy-in). Once I go all in, I'm done. There are also times when I have the freedom to play for as long as I can handle it. In those cases, as long as I am winning, I keep playing until I decide that sleep is more important. Once, I went 18 hours... normally I will leave after about 10 or 12 hours. -Moz "There is no spoon." | ||

| Roy West wrote a column in CP about this a few years back and I think his rule is a good one. He will play for 3 or 4 hours and then get up and take a walk and replay the last 1/2 hour in his head to see if he is still sharp or not. If he notices a number of mistakes (meaning he is either tired or off his game), he gets up and leaves whether or not he is winning or losing. If he chooses to stay, he will do the same thing in two hour intervals. I think that each player has a "zone" of playing time in which they are at their best. Mine seems to stop at around 10 hours, so I rarely play longer than that (in a B&M). Online, it is more like 4 hours for me. | ||

| That is very good advice. Normally when I've been sitting too long I'll get up and go for a walk and think about the hands I've been playing. I find that the very best way to clear your head mid session is to run some laps around the parking lot, nomatter how stupid you look. | ||

| I do not play poker by a clock but I certainly quit as soon as I feel myself getting tired. If I find that I am socializing too much than it's time to pack it in(because for me, whenever I notice this happening, it tells me that for some reason I have lost my focus andmy reason for being there, but that is just me). If I'm really at my best than I will continue to play but I seldom play above the normal amount of hours(which is between 6 to 8 hours; that just screws up the rest of the day and may interfere with my sleep. Because poker allows the professional to have so much freedom, it sometimes can act as a double-edged sword for when we play really long sessions one day and then deprive ourselves of sleep and/or quality family time, it becomes less enjoyable and it takes a toll on your entire well-being. I try to balance my poker career as if it was a 9 to 5 job. The starting time is different for me but the duration is about the same. 4 POKER | ||
