On-line Poker vs. B&M, Big_Slick, 3. Jun 2003 12:36

I just opened an account with Party Poker yesterday. First of all, I'd like to say that I think it's rigged. I won a $100 pot with 4-of-a-kind. I've never hit 4-of-a-kind in a money game. It must be a scam!

Oops... wait... this is a Good-Beat story. Anyways...

The only plus I see to playing in a B&M room is the friendships that are made between players and just the general fun of interacting with other players. I must admit, there is nothing like touching the cards and stacking the chips.

Here are the immediate advantages I see playing on-line.

1) Large selection of tables available. Even more if you have multiple accounts on other sites. A large selection means you should be able to find a table or game that's right for you.

2) You save time driving to and from the card room (it's a half-hour each way for me)

3) You're not putting the wear and tear on your car and you don't have gas expenses.

4) You don't have a dealer to toke. If you are a casual player and win 10 pots a week, that's an extra $500 per year in your pocket.

5) There exists a general convenience of not having to leave home. I don't have to breath cigarette smoke, put up with the jerk next to me, spend extra money on beverages and food, etc.

6) I can play for 30 minutes and log off if I'm off my game. If I drive to a room, I feel like I need to make it "worth" the trip. I might end up staying and playing in a game I know I shouldn't be in.

7) You are playing twice the number of hands that you would be in a B&M game. If you are a good player, this is an obvious advantage.

8) You can see the game better online. For games like 7-stud, I can scan everyone's cards in 2 seconds. In a live game, the person on the other side of the table might have mucked their cards before I could read them clearly. Then I've left guessing what my chances are to making the flush.

These are just the obvious advantages that I have observed in my huge 1-day online career. What are some of the others that I haven't thought of?

What about disadvantages? I would think that going on-tilt would be more difficult to control for some people on-line.

What about an advantage to playing in a B&M game that you don' t have in an online game?

Just some thoughts.

Here are some more advantages to online play:

1- you can play in your underwear.
2- you can show your emotions, curse at the other players, etc. They can't see or hear you.
3- lot's more fish
4- you get in many more hands per hour.

In spite of it all, I still enjoy a live game much more...

You can, if you wish, also easily keep track of your play or your opponents play with a nice notebook next to the computer. Or if you play on one of those sites that you can use Poker Tracker you are even better off.

Did you mention the smaller rake?

Two times as many hands? But what if you play two or three tables at a time?? ;)

Ahh.. but scooping up those chips are fun! I like the idea someone else posted here... I have a nice Poker Chip set as well as being a newbie at collecting real poker chips. So I like to keep them next to me and play with them while I am playing online. Now if I could just get my wife to run around in one of those skimpy waitress outfits and get my 3 year old to take up smoking and get right in my face. Then it would be the perfect atmosphere.

I would have to disagree with this although the rest seems spot-on. I think it is a mistake not to try and know your fellow players. The more I play the more I try and converse to make the game feel friendly. A lot of times I think online games lack the personal feel because people refuse to talk/type. This takes something away from your game. Talk at the table can be very beneficial in the manipulation of your opponents and your EV. I have also met many people that I respect in chance encounters at B&M rooms. Talking also helps you remember a player better than notes alone. The fish that keep the games going want to feel like they are part of a community not just part of some computer game that keeps beating them. Talk and welcome them and their money.

8) Exactly, I would rather play with the catarac crowd because it seems to add excitement when someone calls me down with 72o.

Just my two cents. I could go on but my wife might read #5 if I don't send this now.
