A situation came up at a 4-8 holdem game I was seated at. It was a fairly typical game. There was a raise a call and a reraise before it got to the bigblind who folded his hand. The flop came with 3 aces. Long story short, the big blind mucked A7 offsuite. The reraiser had pocket queens and the bigblinds kicker would have played. This would have been a jackpot. Everybody at the table was really getting on the big blind when he told them what he had. They couldn't believe he folded an Ace in the blind in a jackpot game. Now I felt like I was in the twilight zone; I'm thinking, how could you even consider calling ace little offsuite after it has been raised twice. Am i missing something here. Do you adjust your game because of the jackpot? I don't. I mean the odds of hitting a jackpot on a particular hand is about 16,000 to 1.
Would you guys have called this? Would you have called a single raise? If a good player comes in for a raise I usually muck this hand. How about when you have Ace little in the small blind in an unraised pot do you always call? Do you just play these hands and then tread cautiously if the flop doesn't hit you big?

thanks for your comments

No, the BB was absolutely right. I might see it differently if he had already seen the flop (for obvious reasons) but you gotta play the game, and you can't play trash jsut because of the remote chance of a jackpot hand.

My casino has this kind of jackpot too, and I have play there regularly for the last year, and still have not been in the room when a jackpot hit.

A similar post was made a few weeks ago where a player had mentioned that they mucked a jackpot hand. Most everyone had the same thoughts... too damn bad!!

As a poker player, you are there to play your cards the best way you know how. If they are looking to hit a jackpot, then they can go play Caribbean stud poker.

Most everyone agreed that the person should have kept their mouth shut about the mucked 4-of-a-kind. It only creates animosity.

That's really funny, it sounds like a bunch of people who don't mind how they spend someone else's money. So say the miracle flop doesn't come? Now he has called a reraise with a losing hand.

I would love to play at a table with these guys. The room I play at has a jackpot and believe me, if you played like that you'd loose way more than you'd make when the jackpot hit.

You can often defend your big blind to one raise with AXo. If there are lots of players you have pot odds to try to hit 2 pair or better. If you are few players, you may be good hitting your ace, depending on how the hand plays out. Basically, the half priceness of the situation means that if you think you can play the flop well, you can hang around. Calling 2 bets cold out of the big blind with AXo is suicidally stupid however. What does the original raiser have? Either a big ace or a pocket pair most probably. What does the reraisor have? Almost certainly AA, KK, or AK. You're totally screwed by everything here except KK, but even then you don't want to be in for 2 bets. If is very possible here that you are up against AQ vs KK. Fold that little piece of garbage. Now if there are 5 other players in the hand and you are in the BB and have to decide what to do with suited connectors, then calling is ok. You either hit and play for a big payday or you don't hit and can get away from the hand. Playing something that you hit, but still need to improve a lot is a bad bad bad idea.
