Im in the pokerstars tournament and get a KQ of hearts, i
raise to 450, (blinds 75 /150). I get one caller.
flop comes A10 hearts and Jack diamonds. Wow,
straight and a royal draw. I bet 150, he waits for 30secs,
calls a 3 of heart falls. hmm nut flush. I check, he bets
750, huh? I call and last card a 10clubs. he bets 1k ,
i move in for another 2k. He has pair of 3's.!

did i not trap correctly here? anyway im going to
get the chips quick before i get drawn out anymore.

Looks to me like you played it perfectly by not over-reacting to his bet when the 3 fell. Effectively you got him to bluff off anbother T1k on the river which, if you had CR'd the turn would never have happened.

Whether you meant to or not, you played the hand passively enough to induce a bluff...that kind of play is to be very respected.

You play on the flop was fine, I would have either checked or bet at least half the pot. I don't like the limit size bet.

On the turn your slow play pays off when you catch good and check and your opponent bets into you. You fail to pour the coals to it with the coup 'd grace check re-raise all-in. (Maybe you've never been beaten when slow playing before? Doesn't matter though as that is about to change.)

In short, you never put you opponent to a decision on the turn.

Now comes that really baffling part. When you can finally be behind (with the board pairing), you decide to check-raise. D'oh!

It's the classic case of checking while ahead and betting when behind!!!!! Expensive lesson isn't it?

In hold'em, on the flop, you can make exactly one (1) five card hand between your two cards and the board. It is pretty simple to determine what the best possible hand is in this situation.

When the turn card hits, the number of possible hands that each player can construct is: 2 (using each of 1 in hand with 4 on board) + 4 (2 in hand with 4 choose 3* on the board) = 6.

When the river hits the number of possible hands that each player can construct is: 1 (0 cards in hand with 5 board cards) + 10 (2 each of 1 card in hand times 5 choose 4 on the board) + 10 (both cards in hand with 5 choose 3 board cards) = 21

1:6:21 flop, turn, river (in hold'em )

Why do so hands get sucked out on the river? Because there are so many more possible hands out there to do it. (You ought to see the same analysis for Omaha, oy!)

So, how do you keep people from sucking out?

You can't. All you can do is bet to discourage them.

* combinations
4 choose 3 = 4 (e.g. abc, abd, acd, bcd)
5 choose 3 = 10 (e.g. abc, abd, abe, acd, ace, ade, bcd, bce, bde, cde)
5 choose 4 = 5 (e.g. abcd, abce, abde, acde, bcde)
