Tournament screw up, Brent, 2. Jun 2003 10:57

Am I right in how bad I am kicking myself for folding? Here is what happened in a 66 person tournament this weekend. Toward the end of the tournament I made myself comfortable enough in chips to wait out a seat at the final table. It got down to the point that as soon as one more player from either of the two tables left went out then we would join tables and everyone would be in the money. I get dealt Qh Kh down. I have 9,000 in chips with blinds being 2,000 - 4,000. I call as does my immdiate left and the big blind (who had just came back from 3 chips to now having over 15). Flop comes 3h jh kd. Everyone checks and the big blind bets 5,000 which would put me all in. At this time they announce to stop play after this hand and the tables will be joined. Someone at the other table went out. I thought well no way can I go out now because I am guaranteed money. Immidiatly after I folded it hit me and I asked the dealer what would have happened if I had called and lost. She said I still would have received 11th place money. So I see this as a big mistake because, I folded a pot with 19,000 in it when I had a king high flush draw, runner runner straight draw and high pair with a queen kicker. If I had won that pot, I would have been able to place much higher in the tourney. Instead I had to call all in with ace 8 under the gun so I didn't get blinded off. Guy called with king ten and a king came on the turn to give him the pot. I am not a very experianced tournament player but I had been playing with my opponent for 2 hours and knew he stayed on quality cards. I put him on ace king but am now even doubting that even though he told me that's what he had (I know not to believe anyone at the table). Looking back he made a good position bet to put me all in just before the money seat. Even if he had pocket rockets I think I should have called, I had to call if I wanted to move up in the money. If all else, the money I didn't make is like paying for a lesson because I will never make that mistake again. Looking forward to everyone's comments. Thanks.

Brent

That's a tough decision, but I think I would have called there...depending. You've got a flush draw that is almost certainly good, the straight draw and you're holding top pair with second kicker. With 2 cards to come and a big pot in front of you, it's probably time to take a shot at it.

Nonetheless, how did you see the flop with only 5,000 in your stack and 19,000 in the pot? It sounds like you should have either folded preflop or gone all-in.

4,000 bb 2,000 sb 2 callers and a 5,000 bet. I didn't go all in because I was so close to the money. I am not real experienced but winning some money was my priority. Since midhand I was in the money, that is why I think I should have called.

So would you have made the money for 10th place or would you have had to split that with the guy who went out right before you? Were the two final tables playing hand for hand?

The dealer said that I would have received all the money for 11th place. Stupid me didn't ask till after I had folded.

You need to provide more information about the stacks which are shorter than yours at both tables. I'm going to assume there was one or maybe two players who could not get through their blinds without being all-in. You indicated that you were content to wait for someone else to bust, so you make the final table and a paying spot. You are not in danger of being all-in on this round of blinds, so why do you come alive with KQs? They are two nice cards, but you abandoned your goal when you called. Some veteran tournament players will debate even playing KK on the bubble when another player is shorter, or someone will be all-in on their blind before you even get that far. KQs belongs in the muck if you are trying to make the final table. So you took the flop and it has possibilities. If you lose this hand you get half of 10th. place since someone on the other table busted while this hand was in progress. Will that be enough to cover your buy-in, entry fee, and rebuys or add-ons if your hand is no good? You get at least all of 10th place if you fold, so you need to be better than a 2:1 favorite in a three handed pot to either have the best hand or hit your draw (provided you expect to do no better than 10th place). Since you will have a safer stack if you win, and can reasonably expect to move up to maybe 50% more or better by finishing in a higher spot, I would think that you can probably go all-in with top pair and the redraws here. It's a difficult decision, but I would be swayed by the fact that you are at that point already going to get some money back, and that by folding you could be blinded out quick if you get a poor seat at the final. I'd take a shot at a better stack for the home stretch and more opportunities for a premium starting hand.
