| In response to the posts on longest sessions...Many players seem proud of staying up several days straight...this is an ignorant thing to do! If you think you can still make good decisions after 18 hours I think you are in denial. The human brain cannot function at top level for more than that time period. Not to mention what this does to your health and ability to play well down the road. Roy Cooke | ||

I can tell you from personal experience that it can have a seriously detrimental effect. I had someone close to me who actually has had pyschotic episodes as a result of sleep deprivation. Of course, this is an extreme case, but halucinations are a pretty good sign that you are headed in that direction. In addition, loss of sleep must be recouped. This is the way the psychiatrist explained it to me after the first psychotic episode occurred: Dreams are the brain's way of 'taking a dump,' and getting rid of useless information. If you are not sleeping over a long period of time, the brain gets kinda stopped up, and begins to 'dump' while you are awake... these are the halucinations you experience, both visual and auditory. If this happens often or long enough, the over-tired mind can't tell the difference between the halucinations and reality any more, and psychosis sets in. Left untreated for a short period of time and the effects are lasting. The first course of treament was meds to cause her to have as much REM sleep as possible over the first week or so... she was getting about 23 1/2 hours a day and it took 4 days to catch up... then treatement of the psychosis had to begin. Trust me, you don't want to go there... -Moz "There is no spoon." | ||

| Indeed. Back in my days of work hard - play hard - train hard as a student athlete / party animal I would often pull 2 all nighters in a row and on average I got 6 hours of sleep every 2 days with one long sleep each weekend. I think I still have effects of the sleep deprivation and caffeine addiction when it comes to me being unable to sleep well and normally now that I have the chance. And I got to the point of hallucination a couple of time and it was very not good. | ||

| Personally I know how my play is affected by lack of sleep. My first session ever in a live casino was 27 hours. Granted I was only there for the weekend and wanted to get the full experience but I could really tell the difference in play. I got up enough early on to cover my losses at the end of the session luckily. I quit when I looked around and it was all new faces and I was still playing the same game from the day before. Lack of sleep made me a big fish. Luckily I was still able to walk out making just under a whopping $.50 an hour. Yes, that is a half dollar. I agree, play your game, get some sleep and come back refreshed. | ||

| Thanks Roy. I couldn't agree more. When I have played very long overnight sessions I've found it very easy to stay at the table and say, "These players are just so bad it would be a crime to leave," but there always comes a point when I say, "I'm too tired and coffee just isn't doing it for me any more." When I've listened to that voice and gone home I've always been glad I have. When I've ignored that voice I've become unprofitable. | ||

| Also, when you play marathon sessions, you tend to delve into caffeine abuse. It's probably fine to have a few cups, depending on your level of tolerance; however, nervousness and irritation are two of the greatest obstacles to good poker play. When you fight fatigue with large doses of caffeine, you are raising your cortisol level up, and this can be a problem. I know for a fact that if I've had more than my level of caffeine, I go on tilt easier and give off more tells. If I'm running bad, nervousness will negatively affect my decision making. I also tend to lack that "detachment" from short term results which Wren was talking about when she was describing the "zone". | ||

| Just as an FYI, I didn't have ANY coffee during my long session this weekend. I had one tea, one cranberry/sprite mix, one milkshake and about 5 bottles of water. The tea and cranberry were closer to the beginning. The milkshake I had more because I was hungry than because I needed a wake up. The water definitely helped. | ||

| I just purged on my keyboard. The only thing I've ever mixed with anything sweet like Hawaiian Punch (Crystal Light) is Vodka, and that subject seems taboo for poker players. | OK- Let's make it about poker... I wonder if ordering something weird while at the table would provide enough distraction to give me a psychological advantage over the other players? Like, what if I were to ask for a Peanut Butter and Bacon sandwich? Could I through the table off enough to cause them to make a few extra mistakes? -Moz "There is no spoon." | ||

| If you were to order peanut butter and bacon, I would assume that you had been talking to Plizak. He puts peanut butter on his hamburgers (and thinks I'm weird because I put fried eggs on mine) and talks about bacon ad eminem. | ||

| It's wonderful. Kinda reminds me of the Shirley Temple kiddie drinks I used to order at Swiss Chalet. (sprite + grenadine + fruit + one of those little plastic sword thingies) Cranberry does seem to go well with many beverages. It's also great with orange juice. Healthy too. Many people at the casino order 1/2 cran 1/2 orange. | ||

| That I'll give you, just not carbonation and juice. Plus, you sound like such a pro when you order "1/2 cran, 1/2 orange, and toss in one of those little plastic sword thingies" :) on 2. | Helped by getting you up and making you walk to the facilities! :) Did you not stop and eat during this time? Does anyone else stop and eat during these periods? Not that I'll ever be there. All of the Casino boats around here all have to close for the day around 5am for about 3 hours. | ||

| We usually take a dinner break, but didn't this time. We ate immediately beforehand, and immediately afterwards. I find that just having something like a milkshake or chocolate milk helps keep the hunger pains at bay. Though I really wouldn't recommend going 14 hours without a square mean - it can't be healthy. | ||

| You're definitely right on that on. I do take frequent "mini-breaks" - get up, walk around, check out the action at the other tables, go pee (one benefit of having a tiny bladder - gets me away from the table a lot :) etc. I stretch a lot too. Very important to keep the blood flowing. | ||

| Toward the middle of that session I took a meal button for about 15 minutes and ran a couple of laps around the parking lot just to wake up, get the blood flowing, and not get crushed to death under my own flab. | ||

| I agree wholeheartedly. What was the Wren Zone post? How can I find that thread? Hey, guess what!! Someone gave me four expensive gift certificates today, for the restaurant at Casino San Pablo! (I referred work to them; I'm a semi-retired horticultural consultant trying to make part of my living playing poker). So, I'm serious, noiseboy --I'd love to treat you and your girl friend to dinner soon. What say? | ||
