I am fairly new to poker but I love the game. I have done ok so far and try to read all I can about getting better. I would like to get e private teacher to work with me. I think now is a good time BEFORE I get alot of bad habits.
I play hold'em and live in Los Angeles area....any suggestions?
Thanks

Want to avoid bad habits?

Move out of L.A.

Seriously though, you would probably do better with a mentor than a teacher. A mentor is another player whose play you respect and is willing to watch you and help you improve. (You generally need to play in about the same limits.) In return, you watch his play and provide feedback to him. This type of dialog will help you improve.

However, if you feel you need a teacher you might do well to check the ads in the back of Card Player magazine.

But, before hiring a teacher, do your homework. Ask for references, students they have taught in the past, contact them and ask what they think about the candidate. Also, don't just call the first one of two names on the list. Select the people you are going to contact from the list at random. Maybe you can pare down the list by finding those in the same or nearby area codes.

Yeah, I would be very suspcious of any man advertizing their poker expertize. Any time you see a great, winning player, kiss up to them, joke around with them, complement their play, and then ask them about the game. Also, buy poker books. But I wouldn't trust any person charging me to teach me poker from the back of card player. I know Mike Caro has a "poker university" at one of the LA Casinos. I'm sure if he reads this post, he could give you the info about that. I don't know much about it, but I do know i've learned alot about the game from caro's books and articles, so you could do alot worse then him. I think he has seminars, or something.

I'm not saying that anyone who advertises in Card Player would not be reputable. In fact, I know people who have taken a single lesson/session with one of the Card Player columnists and profited a great deal. I'm just saying that if you are going to pay for a tutorial session or lessons you should check them out, first.

Mike Caro University's online presence can be found at http://www.poker1.com/mcup.asp and operates physically at Hollywood Park Casino. In fact there are about 40 lessons on-line at the above site.

Although I have never attended one of Mike's full seminars, I have heard him speak on serveral occasions and have always taken away something useful.

Paul,
Thank you very much for your insight. As I mentioned I am a newcomer so all input is valuable. I have gotten roughtly the same info from others so it seems at this time I may stick to online seminars or perhaps check out Caro's classes at HP.
Again my thanks and good luck
John
