| Was wanting to get some feedback from any of you out there in the San Jose/San Francisco area about which cardroom you prefer or which may have the better games? I've played numerous times at Bay 101 and really like the layout/location/atmosphere/etc but wondered if there was anywhere better (easier games, maybe?) to play? I've been by Garden City a few times but never played there and know there are a few other places near San Francisco but have never played there, either. Any feedback will be appreciated. | ||

| Come to the Oaks, in Oaktown! It's not too far from Macarthur Bart Station, easy to get too. Home of some of the worst 3-6 players in the world! Some pretty bad 6-12 players too. There's actually some good players too, but there's always that change list. Just to warn you, it gets fairly tough at 15-30, depending on who is there that day, although it's usually not as tough on the weekends or whenever they have two 15-30s going. The tournaments are mostly limit hold'em, but they are well run, and the tournament director is way cool. Also, I think the time charges and blinds are a better deal than the draconian California Drop at many other casinos. At Casino San Pablo, for instance, I think the 3-6 is nearly unbeatable, due to them taking $4 a hand, and the extra button charge in addition to the blinds. In addition, the food isn't half bad, especially the chinese food and the french fries, and there is free coffee and tea for all night sessions! | ||

| Sorry, noiseboy- I have to disagree. I HATE the Oaks! It's dark, crowded, noisy, edgy - -many people are hanging over the rail or wandering the floor searching for money to mooch, or for the next hit of their drug of choice. People are often edgy, angry and impolite at the tables.. It's in a crummy, seedy, Oakland neighborhood; lots of seedy people play at the Oaks, and Bobbi the floorwoman is a bitch. The food sucks and you're lucky if you can find a waitress and get same day service. I have met some nice people there, especially at the congenial stud games, but I stopped going -- I always felt like I want to take a shower afterwards, and with all the table pounding and angry outbursts I couldn't relax and play my best game. In contrast, Casino San Pablo is a civilized, pleasant environment, with polite dealers, floorpeople and staff, and excellent food --AND I just won $400 dollars there tonight in a few hours of 3/6 -- not an uncommon occurence. Easy to win one or two racks at any time. The 6/12 is hard to beat because the people all play together all the time and know each other so well, but the 9/18 is great, in the wee hours when the props are sleepy and people are trying to catch up -- you can bluff in position and they'll actually fold. Quite a rush after 3/6. Tournaments are only $15, as opposed to $50 at Oaks. I also really like Lucky Chances in Colma. It's like a fancy Las Vegas casino -- very classy. on 30. | I think maybe you had some bad experiences there that have colored your view. I've been playing there a long time, and never once has anyone ever asked me for money, or have I seen anyone who I thought was hopped up on drugs, although I'm sure there are a few anywhere you go. There are some surly people at the 1-2 table who hold up the game, but usually the people are very nice at anything higher than 2-4. I have met quite a few nice people there, this one guy bought me and this other guy dinner just because we were at this table where all the good players were running bad and the bad players kept sucking out every hand. Anyway, he was one of the good players and finally won some hands and was like "Hey guys, whattaya want, it's on me." Also, about the tournaments, they are a really good deal! The juice is only $10 for their Wed. night tournament, and the first place is usually around 3K or a little bit more. Also, they add $500 to the prize pool. The Sunday tournaments, the juice is only $15, and first place is usually over 5K and they add $1000.00 to the prize pool. The tournament director is really cool, and all of the players are really nice. Also, it is true that there are always a lot of people at the rail, but they are almost always people who are waiting to get into games, like me for instance. Lastly, the neighborhood isn't that bad, I mean you might not want to be walking around alone at night, but it's not even in the same league with E. Oakland or Hunter's Point in SF. It's about on par with the Mission or Lower Haight. | ||

| One last thing, I don't know where you get that it's seedy and dark in there either. It's totally well lit and clean as far as I can tell. My GF is kinda anal, she's gone with me and hasn't said anything about it being dirty. You are entitled to your opinion, but I just had to defend my turf, I LOVE the Oaks. I'm glad you made money at San Pablo, but long term, I just don't see how you can beat a game where they take off $4 every hand regardless of how many players, how big the pot, whatever. To have that button charge on top of the two blinds is also a big drag. I know that the hourly charge at the Oaks has to be a better deal. | ||

| It does sound like the tournaments are a better deal at the Oaks. I'm going to start playing tournaments -- I'll go back and give the Oaks another chance. Have you ever been to Casino San Pablo? If not, please go soon -- catch a tournament, play live a while -- and tell me your honest opinion. As far as my comment about the Oaks being dark and seedy, I think the bar and restaurant are dark and gloomy, and the sunken poker floor also feels gloomy to me. The tables are uncomfortably close together, the floor gets littered with detritus from the meals people eat at the tables, and --this really grosses me out-- the chips get so sticky I've been able to pick up a stack of six for a big bet and have them all stick together. Yuck! I've noticed many guys are more tolerant in general of dirt and disarray. Ask your GF about the women's bathroom. In my opinion it's small and funky and varies from marginally well-maintained to disgusting. At CSP someone cleans it constantly. The only place I like at the Oaks are those small rooms at the back of the main gaming floor. They are quiet and peaceful and have some elbow room. I know everyone at the Oaks loves to talk about how expensive CSP is, but if it's so hard to beat why do certain pros I know make it their home base? I keep track of my expenses and winnings on a spread sheet, and i do much better at CSP because I'm more comfortable there. I will be back to the Oaks soon, though, because I'm ready to try 15 / 30 and there is none at CSP (The 9/18 is not always going either. It's mostly only late afternoon and evenings.) I really appreciate your information about the character of the 15/30 tables at the Oaks, and the tournaments. Please give CSP a try -- you might really dislike it -- I'd like to know your honest appraisal. | ||
