Whats wrong with my game?, Cade, 30. May 2003 09:44

Ok, I need some help identifying the problems in my game. I'm in a slump right now, and the same thing seems to be occuring every time. I play NLHE mostly and I always start off really good, and build up a good stack, but then by the end of the game I've seemed to piss it all away. I think I may be starting off real aggressive, stealing some pots, etc..., but i once I build up my stack, I become much more passive, less willing to play anything unless I know for sure I can win, because i've noticed that when I do get down to under what I started off with, I can normally get back up a little over even pretty easily.
I think it may just be that I turn conservative because I don't want to loose what I've already made. Some of the problem lately may also just be bad beats (getting out drawn on the river, higher full houses, 4 of a kind beating my full house).
Thanks for any advice.

-Cade

Use an overall strategy of trying to double or triple your original buy-in. Then get out of the game, and go back on the waiting list if you want to continue playing. This way you will never have a large win plus your original buy-in at risk, and you can play within your confort zone.

There are several possibilities.

First of all, when playing no limit or pot limit, the size of your stack changes the strategy of the game a bit. For most players the strategy for a shorter stack is less complex.

So it could be your having trouble playing with a larger stack. One thing you might need to work on is your awareness of the sizes of other players stacks. Since when you're a smaller stack, this doesn't really affect you, but as a large stack it impacts you greatly.

Remember you can play the same style game against the shorter stacks as if you had a shorter stack yourself. Playing against other large stacks is too complex to give you simple advice. All I can really suggest is to try to not tangle with them too much, unless you have a decent read on them.

The other thing it could be, is that this is a psychological thing for you. You might be trying to preserve a win,etc... If you can't find a way to overcome this, then simply leave the game once you hit a decent score.

Maybe You like me. I think I have came to a realization about my current game when I have been knocked out in the same NL tourney 4 times in a row at nearly the exact same time. On the ride back from the last loss I asked myself why am I doing this? I came to answer that seemed to fit. What primarly is going thro my head is: I wanna make a move after the first break or just go home. I don't wanna grind away and get 11th place. This is roughly a 90 minute time frame. If im playing a live game I generally am winning the first 90 minutes and then start losing. Then it made me look at the rest of my live. If i go fishing I get bored after rougly 90 minutes. I actually took a look at my watch and generally took a mental note of the last time I have gone fishing there all almost exactly an hour and a half. So what does this mean. I guess I got ADD. Attention Deficit Disorder, seriously. Or maybe Im just aggrophobic and wanna return home after doing the same thing for 90 minutes. Whichever I quite sure Im mental.

I read research last year that the human attention span is -- guess what -- 90 minutes!! Totally fits with what I've observed teaching and doing consultations in my career as a horticulturist. Never thought to apply it to poker -- I have had Cade's experience, at limit hold em, MANY times, to the point where I try to make myself leave after my initial wins. I like Andrew Wells suggestion a lot, and I'm going to try it. I think I slip because not only does my attention wane, but my DISCIPLINE wanes -- it's like I eventually get infected by the poor, loose players and loosen my standards for starting hands, chasing, etc. The big initial winnings also don't seem quite like real money, so I get too loose with it .

thanks for that confirmation on my current theory as to why I my be on tilt. I have given it some thought as well and it seems to fit. I have been playing poker more recreationally, and I quess taken it less seriously, but going to start setting an alarm on my watch for about 80 minutes to remind me of my danger zone. And Ill see how that works

Please see my reply to Swagman's reply to you -- what do you think? Have you had any further thoughts or self-observations over the weekend?
