Very stupid rule..., stdioh, 29. May 2003 13:36

So I took a month off of poker, as I posted about, to spend more time at my day job, with the lovely wren, and nursing my wounded pride and bankroll after a -120 BB downswing over 26.5 hours. Two days ago I warmed up with a little 5-10 and yesterday I got back to the 10-20. A couple of things in Brantford had changed. There was new clean felt on the tables. They had opened the cage in the cardroom, meaning that players coming in brought chips with them so less fills and a faster game. One fundamental thing had changed though. You were nolonger required to post when coming back from a meal button.

Lets explore the profit to be made from this rule. You are allowed one meal button per shift, so if you play over 2 shifts, you can get 2 meal buttons. You can take a meal button at any time, so immediately after playing UTG you can go. You can come back at any time. When you come back you can play the cutoff without posting. Essentially this means that you can leave for 2 hands, head to the can, come back, and play without posting.

How does this give you an edge? You save posting 1.5 small bets. That's 3 small bets per session over 2 shifts. Lets say that you play 5 days a week, that's 15 small bets. Lets say that you play in the 30-60 game all the time. That's 30*15=$450 per week. Now lets say that you play 5 days a week, but you only play for 2 hours at a time, but you always get in both meal buttons. Then that's $45/hour or .75 BB/hour - just from taking 2 meal buttons each session.

You can see why this is a terrible rule. Needless to say, no session will go by now when I don't take a meal button. Who profits from this? Anybody who uses it. Who doesn't? People who don't know any better. Why did they bring it in? It drifted down from above. I would imagine that some non-poker executive decided to do it that way because people were complaining that they had to put out too much money when they came back from a meal. For instance on 10-20 if you miss 2 session fees while you eat (45 minute button) then come back you would have to post big, surrender small, and kick in $10 for session making your meal seem like it cost you $25 just to step away.

Now I think that it is a horrid practice and that they see the error in their ways, but in the mean time, I'm taking every edge I can get without breaking the rules or doing anything indecent.

Food for thought.

That one is bizarre. At Foxwoods where I play, they give you the big and little blind buttons and you basically can wait for the BB to come and then enter as if you had never left or you can post behind the puck and surrender the small.

You are right...that rule can and will save players like you a ton of $$ while it is in place (the casino will lose on the rake too...hee hee).

Well, since that casino charges a session fee, they don't lose anything on rake. While you are on your meal you are occupying the seat and have to pay session.

But yeah, I figure that using this rule can up my salary by about .2 BB/hour and that's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

What?! You mean they don't serve you at the table? I usually just keep playing while eating, taking a few bites after folding each garbage hand. It's great, the food comes on a little rolling cart.

Yeah, that rule is dumb, people should have to post.

Yeah...the place where I play when in Vancouver serves you at the tables...it is a wonderful game there. 10-20 with a full kill and the rake is $3 per hand that sees a flop. You have to pay for everything though...even coffee.

To me, the idea of serving food at the table is gross. There have been times when I've been sitting there for 8-10 hours straight and I would have done anything for someone to fire a hotdog or package of sesame snaps my way, but all in all I'm content to sip on my mango shakes and let my tummy rumble away. Why? First of all, I wouldn't want to be eating something that requires touching the food directly or indirectly at the table. My hands are filthy from poker chips and cards, and the last thing I want to do is get them anywhere close to my food or my mouth. Second of all, the food can get on the cards, the table, etc. and that's nasty too. Furthermore, I'd imagine that allowing food slows the game down noticeably, which isn't good either. Just my thoughts.

I've thought about the hygiene issues also. I always eat left-handed, and play poker with my right hand. Also, a good hand washing is certainly in order before delving in. I agree that it's gross to touch a bunch of poker chips then eat any kind of finger food.

I'm the same way. My right hand only touches cheques and my left hand is for touching my face and/or dick. Of course the casino becomes that much scarier when you're playing a 1 hour drive from SARSville.

where i come from everyone eats at the table. if you miss a blind away from the table you can wait until it passes or pay. I really like that as long as you haven't missed a blind you can still get paid if table hits a jackpot, even if you were in bathroom at the time they hit.
