Is this tourney a rip off?, Big_Slick, 28. May 2003 13:53 | ||

| NLHE. $25 entry with $5 re-buys. Initial buy-in receives $300 in chips. Chip count must be at or under $300 to rebuy. Re-buys receive $500 in chips. 1 add-on is allowed regardless of chip count at the end of the re-buy period for $800 in chips. Each level plays for 15 minutes. Level 1: 25/25 Level 2: 25/50 Level 3: 50/100 Level 4: 100/200 End of re-buy period Level 5: 200/400 Level 6: 200/400 $25 Ante Level 7: 300/600 $50 Ante Level 8: 400/800 $75 Ante The BB's continue to $1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 6000 and finally 12,000 respectfully. My question... The blinds are so large compared to your chips, it seems like only the lucky will survive. Is my analysis correct? Is this worth playing in? Last week, 1st place paid just under $2,000. I'm a little weary though. Also... how is a re-buy different from an add-on? Thanks. | ||

| Well, it is certainly different. I don't know if that makes it a rip-off. It really sounds like it is designed to bring in maximum profit for the casino... though I don't know what the difference is between a re-buy and an add-on. I can only speculate that an add-on means you can add-on chips at any time, whereas you normally have to bust out for a re-buy (I think)... -Moz "Life is a dream. | really sounds like it is designed to bring in maximum profit for the casino That's my point... get the players to show up only to have a one hour tournament. Then get them to the tables ASAP so the casino can make their rake. | ||

| :) Well, I usually think of 'rip off' as being something dishonest or illegal... this just sounds like a business practice created by people who really don't care about the players... I don't really think it's dishonest as it presents itself exactly as it is (I assume), and it certainly doesn't sound illegal... in any case, if you want to know if I think it's worth a buy-in, I think I would probably not spend my money on it. -Moz "Life is a dream. | A rebuy can be made only when you have 300 or less in chips. At the end of the rebuy period you can get the add on, and the amount of chips you have does not matter. I have played in a few of these, my strategy is to play tight and let the fish build the prize pool. Do not rebuy and just take the add on. They are a lot of fun, try it. | ||

| The important thing here is to take advantage of the idiotic structure. What that means is that you need to get a lot of chips fast. So what you do is this: Post your blind and fold a hand, then rebuy immediately. You'll now have just under $800. Then come out blasting and try to either lose it or double it through. If you lose it then rebuy and come out blasting again. When you double up to between $1500 and $2000 then it is ass-sitting time. Play good poker and try to win the damn hell thing. But you still need to not be araid of getting all in with a smaller stack when your cards are pretty good. After all, if they are following good strategy, they'll be trying to double up early too. The $5 rebuy for $500 tournament chips makes it essential to rebuy ASAP. Also, if you see the end of the rebuy period in sight and you are holding less than $800, but more than $500, you should probably push all-in with just about anything decent. Lets say you have $700 you want to take a shot at doubling up to $1400 and having a lead over everybody who adds on, rather than having to pay $5 to add on $100 or being a miserably small stack. I'm sure that doing the math to find optimal strategy for a tourney like this would be daunting and I would stay away from it just because it would be so crapshooty at the start, but if the opponents are really wretched, then it might be worth taking a shot at. It has to be the sort of thing that you can buy into, blast 4 rebuys, lose early, and not feel bad about though. | ||
