"Fit or Fold" article by Malmuth, shorn, 27. May 2003 11:24 | ||

| OK, so I am a little behind on my CP reading when i stumble across the article that Malmuth wrote on "Fit or Fold" meaning if the flop doesn't fit you then you should fold. Generally, i agree with the concepts that he and Sklansky advise as a tight aggressive way to make money long term. However, it seemed to me that he went a little too far in this article in terms of advising calls on the flop with hands that didn't warrant it (I can't remember the exact holdings). Did anyone else get this same impression? | ||

| I haven't read the article, but I have noticed this in other writings by Sklansky and Malmuth. They advocate calling on the flop in middle and late position when you hold overcards (for example). I think, though, that if you read more deeply into what they are trying to say, they are basically saying that this is not a hard/fast rule... many pieces of the puzzle should be considered... do you have reason to believe the bettor has a pockt pair for a potential set (did he raise pre-flop)? Do you have additional outs (overcards plus str8 or flush draw or both)? In other words, I think what they are trying to say is this: while caution is good, don't be too afraid to call on the flop if it didn't hit you... -Moz "Life is a dream. | Moz- I agree. That is generally what they say in the books. However, in this article, none of that was mentioned. It was like "It's OK to call with third pair for your five outer in middle position with others still behind you even though the flop didn't "fit" you". Stuff like that. Anyway, I just found it an odd writing for Mason who generally writes reallt solid analysis. Take a read of it and let me kinow what you think. Steve | ||

| I just read the article, and I see what you mean. Notice in the article, he keeps referring to Holdem for Advanced Players. I think the article summarizes in about a page a discussion that took (if I remember correctly) somewhere between 8 and 10 pages in the book. It seems to me that the intention was to get the same points accross in the article, but because of limited real estate on the page it was done down and dirty. I would say that anyone who was confused by the article (as I was) should go back and read/re-read the section of the book (as I will) to tie it all together. The presence of more detailed information in the book should put it all in perspective. -Moz "Life is a dream. Live your dream, because we all wake up eventually." | ||

| I think you're right about making some specious calls, but it is hard to know exactly what Mason is talking about with respect to table textures. There's too much "it depends" to really say whether his advice is good or not for each situation. So I would just take it with a grain of salt. | ||

| I was a little confused by the article. I have got back out my Sklansky to confirm what he said, it just didn't seem logical to do that all the time, especially in low limits when you'll get called anyway. I don't think that the article had enough room to fully explain, I would have liked to see the draft copy. I hope any in my position will write Malmuth and ask him to make it a two parter. | ||
